Job Description:

Position Overview

The Worship Leader is responsible for leading, organizing, developing, and overseeing the worship ministry of the church.

This position will take ownership of the weekly Sunday Encounter worship experience and provide leadership to the church’s vocalists, musicians, and worship team volunteers.

The Worship Leader is responsible for ensuring that the worship ministry is spiritually healthy, organized, prepared, and aligned with the vision, values, and direction of the church.

This is a part-time position focused specifically on the worship department.

Key Responsibilities

Sunday Worship Leadership

  • Lead worship during the weekly Sunday Encounter and other designated services as agreed upon.

  • Plan and prepare the worship portion of each Sunday Encounter.

  • Select songs that align with the church’s vision, theology, culture, and overall service direction.

  • Coordinate with the Lead Pastor and/or teaching pastor regarding upcoming services when necessary.

  • Prepare song arrangements, keys, transitions, tracks, charts, and other necessary worship resources.

  • Lead the worship team through Sunday morning soundcheck and run-through.

  • Ensure the worship team is prepared and ready prior to the start of Sunday Encounter.

  • Create a worship environment that encourages genuine congregational participation rather than simply performance.

Worship Team Management

  • Schedule vocalists, musicians, and worship team volunteers.

  • Recruit and audition new worship team members as needed.

  • Develop and encourage existing musicians and vocalists.

  • Communicate schedules, songs, keys, expectations, call times, and other service information to team members in advance.

  • Maintain healthy communication and accountability within the worship team.

  • Identify and develop future worship leaders, musicians, and vocalists.

  • Provide constructive feedback and coaching when needed.

  • Build a worship team culture centered around humility, preparation, excellence, reliability, unity, and spiritual growth.

Weekly Worship Preparation

The church does not currently hold a separate weekly worship rehearsal. Worship team members are expected to prepare individually using resources provided to them throughout the week.

The Worship Leader will:

  • Select and finalize the weekly worship set.

  • Ensure musicians and vocalists receive songs, charts, reference recordings, keys, tracks, and other resources with adequate preparation time.

  • Prepare arrangements and transitions prior to Sunday Encounter.

  • Prepare and maintain Ableton sessions, tracks, click tracks, cues, and other necessary worship resources.

  • Maintain and update Planning Center Services for upcoming Sunday Encounters.

  • Maintain an organized worship song library and repertoire.

  • Introduce new worship songs to the team and congregation as appropriate.

  • Establish clear preparation expectations for worship team members.

  • Engage with Abide's DLT meeting.

  • Learning and creating worship tracks.

Worship Ministry Administration

  • Maintain the worship team schedule and volunteer rotation.

  • Manage worship scheduling and service information through Planning Center.

  • Maintain accurate worship team contact information and availability.

  • Assist with planning the worship ministry calendar.

  • Communicate worship-related equipment or production needs to church leadership.

  • Help oversee worship-related instruments, microphones, in-ear monitors, tracks, software, and other resources.

  • Assist with worship ministry budget planning when applicable.

Sunday Service & Special Event Coordination

  • Work collaboratively with pastors, production volunteers, sound technicians, media teams, and other Sunday ministry leaders.

  • Communicate worship-related service changes to the appropriate team members.

  • Help create smooth transitions between worship and other elements of the Sunday Encounter.

  • Prepare worship for special services including Easter, Christmas, baptisms, conferences, worship nights, and other designated church events.

  • Participate in service planning conversations when worship involvement is needed.

Additional time or compensation may be discussed for significant events or responsibilities that fall substantially outside the normal weekly expectations of this part-time position.

Team Culture & Spiritual Leadership

  • Model the mission, vision, values, and culture of the church.

  • Encourage worship team members to grow spiritually as well as musically.

  • Pray with and for the worship team.

  • Foster a healthy worship culture centered around serving the church rather than performance.

  • Address worship team concerns appropriately and in partnership with church leadership.

  • Maintain confidentiality and demonstrate maturity when handling sensitive ministry or team matters.

  • Participate in a small group within the church.

  • Be actively engaged in the spiritual life and community of the church.

  • Be dependable, prepared, punctual, and able to lead volunteers effectively.

  • Be able to receive feedback and work collaboratively with pastoral leadership.

  • Demonstrate spiritual maturity and a genuine commitment to the church’s mission, beliefs, values, and culture.

Expected Weekly Time Commitment

This position is expected to average approximately 15–20 hours per week, including Sunday responsibilities.

Weekly responsibilities may include:

  • Sunday Encounter, soundcheck, and team preparation

  • Song selection and worship planning

  • Planning Center preparation

  • Ableton and track preparation

  • Worship team scheduling

  • Communication with musicians and vocalists

  • Preparing charts, arrangements, keys, and reference materials

  • Worship team development and recruiting

  • Meetings with pastoral or production leadership as needed

  • Preparation for upcoming services and worship-related events

The exact weekly schedule may vary depending on holidays, special services, church events, and worship ministry needs.

Success in This Role

A successful Worship Leader will create a worship ministry that is spiritually healthy, musically prepared, organized, dependable, and aligned with the overall vision of the church.

Worship team members should know what is expected of them, receive the resources they need to prepare, feel valued and developed as members of the team, and arrive on Sunday ready to serve.

The Worship Leader should take ownership of the worship department so that pastoral leadership can trust that worship is being planned, communicated, and executed with consistency and excellence.
