Job Title: Worship Director
Ministry: Worship & Creative Arts
Position Type: Part-Time (20 hours/week)
Compensation: $21.00 – $25.00 / hour + Paid Vacation
Location: San Marcos, CA (Must reside within a 20-minute drive of San Marcos)
At The Hills, our mission is simple and central to everything we do: to lead anyone and everyone into a life-changing relationship with Jesus. We believe in being disciples who make disciples through genuine, intentional relationships. As a portable church community gathering weekly at Baypoint Preparatory Academy, we are adaptable, hands-on, highly relational, and deeply committed to meeting people right where they are.
We are seeking a relational, shepherd-hearted Worship Director to cultivate a culture of authentic worship across all generations at The Hills.
More than just a skilled musician, our Worship Director is a developer of people. You will shepherd, recruit, and equip a volunteer team of 10–15 musicians and vocalists who lead worship across our core ministry environments: Sunday Gatherings, Hills Youth, Young Adults, and Hills Kids. If you love building community, developing emerging leaders, and guiding people into meaningful encounters with God, this role was built for you.
Volunteer Leadership & Development: Proactively recruit, audition, train, and disciple worship volunteers across all age brackets. You are a catalyst for building teams and empowering others to lead.
Sunday Worship Experience: Oversee the musical and logistical execution of Sunday morning worship, including the setup and tear-down required in our portable church environment.
Hills Youth Worship (Wednesday Nights): Direct and mentor a team of students and adult volunteers to facilitate engaging worship environments for our student ministry.
Pastoral Care: Shepherd and care for your team members personally—fostering spiritual growth, authentic community, and healthy rhythms of ministry.
Musical & Technical Preparation: Plan cohesive, Gospel-centered setlists, build backing tracks using playback software, and lead midweek/weekend rehearsals.
Staff Collaboration: Participate actively in weekly staff meetings, regular 1-on-1 pastoral check-ins, and broader church outreach initiatives.
Heart of a Shepherd: A grounded, mature follower of Jesus with a solid theological foundation and a passion for relational discipleship.
Team Builder & Recruiter: An energizing, magnetic people-person who naturally invites others into ministry and equips them to flourish.
Musicianship & Vocal Ability:
Strong vocal leadership that is inviting and easy for a congregation to sing along with.
Proficiency in leading from either acoustic/electric guitar or keys.
Experience with digital worship tools such as Logic Pro, Playback, Planning Center, or similar platforms.
The worship director will know how to coach every musician (singers, drummers, keys, guitars)
Reading sheet music is not required, but the worship director may be required to give sheet music to strings players or more traditional musicians on occasion and play along with the sheet music.
Adaptable & Resilient: Comfortable with the dynamic rhythm of portable church setups and tear-downs.
Locally Connected: Resides within 20 minutes of San Marcos, CA, to ensure regular presence in our community and close relational proximity to our church family.
Sunday: 7:00 AM – 12:30 PM (Sunday Gathering, Rehearsal, Setup & Tear-Down)
Monday: 1:00 PM – 2:30 PM (Staff Meeting)
Wednesday: 5:45 PM – 9:00 PM (Hills Youth Worship & Community)
Weekly Check-in: 1 Hour (1-on-1 with Lead Pastor)
Flexible Hours (~9 Hours): Rehearsal prep, set planning, volunteer connection, tracking software programming, and outreach support.
Hourly Rate: $21.00 – $25.00 / hour (based on experience).
Benefits: Paid vacation package. (Note: Medical and retirement benefits are not offered for this role at this time).
Sabbath & Sundays Off: We believe in healthy ministry rhythms. The Hills observes church-wide volunteer rest weekends three times per year (Memorial Day Weekend, Labor Day Weekend, and the Sunday after Christmas). In addition, the Worship Director receives two scheduled Sundays off per year (totaling 5 Sundays off annually).
Leadership Support: You will not lead alone. The Hills staff and elders are committed to coaching you, helping you raise the necessary funds to meet ministry goals, and providing the tools you need to take our worship ministry to the next level.
