Job Description for Part-Time Director of Youth*

(* Grades 6-12)

20 hours/Week (flexible with ministry needs)


Valley Presbyterian Church in Portola Valley, California is seeking a Director of Youth Ministries. Join us in dreaming and innovating the future of the church in the California redwoods.


Purpose and Goals

  • Model a personal and active faith

  • Lead youth program and develop age appropriate activities that promote community, fun, and faith development

  • Meet the spiritual, social, and emotional needs of students

  • Create a safe environment for students to experience a supportive youth group and larger inter-generational community in a way that encourages questions and connection

Overall Tasks

  • Create an events calendar for fall and spring semesters (considering the various school schedules), distribute calendar, recruit parent volunteers to provide meals, transportation, and supervision

    • Includes: monthly connection events and a mission opportunity at least once a semester in coordination with the Mission Committee

    • Includes two annual overnight events to be determined and planned

  • Manage annual youth budget

  • Develop and recruit youth volunteers who can provide relational connection, mentoring and assistance with events

  • Maintain records of activities, including participants, costs, permission slips, and incident/accident reports

  • Support students outside of church through attending sports games, performances, and other activities

  • Be available for guidance and counseling for youth on an as needed basis

  • Continue youth alumni involvement with 1-2 events throughout the year

Responsibilities on Sundays (One Sunday off per month)

  • Serve as the teacher for the high school Sunday School class

    • Focus for class: meeting the spiritual, social, and emotional needs of students in a safe environment

  • Coordinate and recruit parent-teachers for the middle school Sunday class

  • Act as liturgist quarterly and incorporate youth into worship leadership roles

  • Lead and engage the youth in planning Youth Sunday (April of each year)

  • Co-teach (with Pastor) the Confirmation Class every other year

    • Create Class schedule and distribute

    • Recruit contributors

Reporting Requirements

  • Reports to Head of Staff/Senior Pastor

  • Attend weekly Staff meeting

  • Attend Session and other committee meetings, as needed and in conversation with Head of Staff/Senior Pastor

  • Write Annual Report on Youth Activities

  • Work and communicate well with other staff members
