He will have the primary responsibility of preaching the Word “in season and out of season” (II Timothy 4:2). Along with the elders, he will provide administrative leadership for the church. He will model the Christ-like life for both the congregation and community. The position offered is a full-time position with benefits, and salary commensurate with experience and educational training.

Qualifications & Responsibilities

To be a pastor is first and foremost to meet the biblical requirements laid out in I Timothy 3:1-7, Titus 1:6-9, and I Peter 5:1-3. He needs to have a clear testimony of personal salvation and commitment to the Lord Jesus Christ.

To be our pastor he must be in full agreement with and supportive of the statement of faith for Chapel City Church and our Mission, Vision, and Values statement. If he is not ordained in the Evangelical Free Church, he should be willing and able to seek that ordination.

Our pastor needs to be a committed student of the Word, prayerfully and under the guidance of the Holy Spirit teaching us and helping us take Sunday’s faith into our Monday world. His exposition of Scripture should reflect a literal and historical understanding of the text. Working in coordination with the staff, his ministry on Sundays should contribute to worship that regularly brings us into the presence of God.

Our pastor must demonstrate administrative ability in shaping the long-term direction of the church in conjunction with the Board of Elders, He needs to be sensitive to the changing needs of the congregation and the society we live in. He needs to exercise responsive servant leadership, carefully and consciously listening to the staff, both paid and volunteers, and elders. He should intentionally look to identify and disciple leaders from among his congregation to further the ministries and outreach of the church. He should support current ministries and look to develop and promote new ministries as they become needed.

Our pastor needs to be committed to the ministry of compassionate, personal care for his flock. He will need to make himself available for biblically counseling, comforting, and sometimes lovingly confronting us in our times of spiritual need. He will need to foster unity of purpose and spirit across a generationally diverse body of believers.

As pastor he should commit to personal and regular accountability with other godly men, seeking from them encouragement and support in his role as pastor. If he is married, he must keep his wife and family as a high priority, loving and caring for them as Christ loves and cares for us. He must maintain an active and personal devotional and prayer life before God.

We would prefer a candidate for our senior pastor have a Master of Divinity degree or equivalent higher education from an accredited evangelical seminary, and also have a proven record of pastoral experience of at least 5 years.

Specific Job Responsibilities

  1. Plan and conduct public worship services, in coordination with Leadership Team.  Such services include prayer, scripture reading, preaching of God’s word, songs of praise, and administration of the New Testament ordinances of baptism and the Lord’s Supper.

  2. As an elder, shepherd the flock by caring for people with prayer, counseling, admonishment, and visitation.

  3. Provide, with the Board of Elders, administrative leadership for the church, including the supervision of paid and volunteer staff members

  4. Identify and disciple leaders in the church

  5. Promote and encourage church ministries and outreaches

Who We Are

Chapel City Church is located in Camarillo, California, a largely suburban community of approximately 70,000 in Ventura County.  The surrounding area has deep roots in agriculture--citrus, avocadoes, strawberries, and truck farming--but has added a variety of light industries and commercial establishments to the economic base over the past thirty years. Camarillo is home to one of the newest Cal State campuses, California State University Channel Islands. We also provide housing for many servicemen and women and their families from the nearby Pt. Mugu naval base.

The population of Camarillo is fairly ethnically diverse along Southern California lines with a mix of white, Latino, Asian, and black ethnicities represented. The income level and educational level of the adult population here is slightly above average for Southern California.

Chapel City Church was first established in 1973 as Camarillo Evangelical Free Church and moved to its present location in 1981. The church is a participating member in the Evangelical Free Churches of America. We currently have 210 active members with a weekly Sunday attendance of 275 children and adults. Our congregation generally mirrors our community demographically but is less ethnically diverse. We are a mix of young and established families with a significant number of retirees.
