Job Description:

Full Charge Bookkeeper

A non-denominational growing Christian church located in Lake Zurich, IL, is seeking a disciple of Jesus Christ to provide bookkeeping/accounting services for the church. The position provides input into and assists others in directing the financial affairs of the church.

Key areas of responsibility include but are not limited to:

  • Business systems
  • Maintain church accounting system, procedures, and records
  • Maintain church payroll records
  • Assist in maintaining and developing required internal controls
  • Transactions and Recording
  • Oversee accumulation of giving records and related accounting records,
  • Handle cash disbursement and payroll functions
  • Maintain general ledgers, including General and various Designated Funds
  • Reporting
  • Prepare monthly financial reports for Treasurer and Finance Team
  • Support staff, ministry leaders, oversight groups, and others with pertinent financial reporting and analysis.
  • Support to Elders, Staff, and Finance Teams
  • Be part of the annual budgeting process: provide staff with needed historical information, consolidate information and input from staff, and assist in analyzing outputs
  • Monthly analyze of actual/forecast financial performance against the budget
  • Provide data and advice to support staff and leaders, including research, analysis and  recommendations regarding business matters
  • Perform special projects as requested

 Other

  • Oversee all cash management – maintain account balances
  •  Supervise church counting teams and financial volunteers
  • Assist in administering human resource policies, processes and employee benefits
  • Assist in administering insurance needs, business contracts/leases and other business matters
  • Payroll input, payment of withholding taxes, direct deposit of paychecks, quarterly & annual payroll tax returns

Prerequisites of the candidate:

  • Education, Training, and Experience
  • Minimal 2 year degree or certification in Accounting/Bookkeeping
  • 4 or more years’ experience in a full charge bookkeeping role including cash receipts, accounts payable and disbursements, general ledger, financial statements and payroll functions
  • Experience in managing staff and/or volunteers
  • Certified Church Administrator a plus
  • Proficient in Shelby or other church management software a real plus
  • Proficient in  MS Excel and MS Word
  • Experience in payroll tax reporting and related issues
  • Excellent understanding of internal accounting controls
  • General knowledge of business systems and processes
  • Knowledge and experience with non-profit organizations, fund accounting and other related tax/reporting requirements very helpful
