About the Location:

Plant City is in central Florida along what is known as the I-4 corridor.  I-4 cuts Florida like a belt with the west side anchored in Tampa, the east side in Daytona Beach, and the belt buckle of Orlando has Disney mouse ears. We are between Tampa to the west and Orlando to the east. Plant City is one of three incorporated cities in Hillsborough County, the fourth largest county in Florida. The city limits encompass 28.1 square miles and about 40,000 people.

The city was incorporated in 1885, and named after H.B. Plant, the railroad magnate that pioneered the west coast of Florida. Plant City continues that tradition today with one of the best train spotting locations in the country and you are never far from the sound of trains in town.

Plant City’s main claim to fame is being the Winter Strawberry Capital of the World, and home to the Florida Strawberry Festival.  This event, which takes over the town in early March is the tenth largest fair in the United States, attracting over 500,000 visitors and top musical acts.  Many of our members are actively involved with the Festival, including both the current and previous Presidents. This also celebrates Plant City’s deep agricultural roots in farming, citrus and livestock. There are a lot of pick-up trucks in this town.

Plant City is uniquely located to allow its residents to live as either participants in a small town or as a bedroom community of Tampa.  The area, along with the rest of Florida is in the midst of strong growth in both population and business development. This is changing the character of Plant City from a small southern town to more of a melting pot culturally as we welcome new residents from other states and a large Hispanic population.

The business focus is changing also. As development increases, the acreage in farming is declining. New business focus is centered on distribution and manufacturing, largely fed by a skilled blue-collar work force and proximity to all forms of transportation like the previously mentioned I-4 and railroads, along with the Port of Tampa.

Plant City is also renowned for the quality and quantity of its recreational offerings, with strong leagues in all major youth sports. The area is serviced by three public high schools, one with an International Baccalaureate program. There are many private and charter schools in the region, and home schooling also has a large presence.  Collegiate offerings are varied and close, with the Hillsborough Community College Plant City campus, the University of South Florida in Tampa and Florida Southern in Lakeland, as examples of local options.
