About the Organization:
Prairie Lakes Church has existed in Cedar Falls, Iowa, for over 150 years. One year after the city of Cedar Falls was incorporated in 1854, a small group of citizens began meeting in rented facilities. On August 14, 1858, the Cedar Falls Baptist Church was
officially organized. In 1862, the congregation changed its name to First Baptist Church. The church purchased a building at 5th and Main Street in 1864. In 1900, the church purchased the Methodist Episcopal Church located at 7th and Washington. The old church
was demolished to make room for a new facility. The new building was a beautiful brick building that served the congregation for 64 years.
In 1976, the congregation voted to level the old 1900 building and construct a new multi-purpose building. It was dedicated in October 1977. By 2000, the church was outgrowing its facilities. Soon the congregation purchased 33 acres at the corner of Hudson
and Viking Roads and began construction on a 55,000 sq. ft. facility in 2003. The new Cedar Falls Campus opened in February 2005. At the time of the move, First Baptist Church chose to adopt a new name, Prairie Lakes Church, because of its proximity to Prairie

About the Location:
Between 1950 and 1980, the City of Cedar Falls had one of the fastest growing municipal populations in the State of Iowa. This was spurred primarily by economic growth in the Metropolitan Area: namely John Deere and Company, Rath Packing, and Chamberlain
Manufacturing all in Waterloo; a tremendous growth in UNI enrollment; and emphasis by civic leaders on quality of life factors in the community. Also, during this time, and up to 1990, open enrollment of students and the Price Lab School at UNI were very important
issues facing Cedar Falls.
In 1967, the State College of Iowa became known as the University of Northern Iowa. Other prominent landmarks and community facilities were being constructed during this time including the Broom Factory, Sartori Hospital, and the Cedar Falls Bible Conference.
Today, the City of Cedar Falls takes pride in its schools, its relationship with UNI, strong leadership, and development being experienced by the community. The City has a strong desire to: maintain its identity through leadership; foster growth and development;
and to improve services and its quality of life amenities whenever possible.
