Job Description:

Location: Sumter, SC

About the Organization:

First Baptist Church Sumter is a historic, downtown Baptist church located in the center of a revitalizing downtown area. FBC was founded in 1813, making it 204 years old at the present time. FBC is a testament to the faithfulness of God, as this body has been able to minister among Sumter for over two centuries.

After its founding in 1813 with thirteen original members, this church built the first church building in Sumter in 1820. As God blessed and grew the church, subsequent buildings were built in 1854, 1902, and 1973. Over the course of the past two hundred years, FBC Sumter has been a sponsoring or planting church of four other area churches as well as being active in local, state, and national associations and conventions.

FBC Sumter has a rich history in their efforts to proclaim the gospel to the ends of the earth. FBC has always been a large contributor to the International Missions Board, as well as developing partnerships and sending teams to the ends of the earth proclaiming the gospel.

In 1989, Hurricane Hugo came on land in Charleston, SC and made a straight line to Sumter. As a result of the damage, Brown Chapel was destroyed. The church built a three-story building for Sunday school classes, discipleship groups, and more that is still used today to make disciples.

Pastor Dan Barber is the current pastor of First Baptist Church, and was called to FBC on February 20, 2012. Under Pastor Dan’s guidance, the church has seen growth both in numbers and health. The church currently has missions partnerships in three different countries around the world (Haiti, Romania, and Kenya).

The church has focused its mission and vision around a key statement: FBC exists to see lives changed and people sent by the gospel of Jesus Christ as we seek to proclaim the gospel until all have heard. This mission is upheld by five pillars which shape the nature of ministry at FBC: authentic worship, biblical community, equipping the next generation, expository preaching, and missions.
