About the Organization:
First Baptist Church Sumter is a historic, downtown Baptist church located in the center of a revitalizing downtown area. FBC was founded in 1813, making it 204 years old at the present time. FBC is a testament to the faithfulness of God, as this body has
been able to minister among Sumter for over two centuries.
After its founding in 1813 with thirteen original members, this church built the first church building in Sumter in 1820. As God blessed and grew the church, subsequent buildings were built in 1854, 1902, and 1973. Over the course of the past two hundred
years, FBC Sumter has been a sponsoring or planting church of four other area churches as well as being active in local, state, and national associations and conventions.
FBC Sumter has a rich history in their efforts to proclaim the gospel to the ends of the earth. FBC has always been a large contributor to the International Missions Board, as well as developing partnerships and sending teams to the ends of the earth proclaiming
In 1989, Hurricane Hugo came on land in Charleston, SC and made a straight line to Sumter. As a result of the damage, Brown Chapel was destroyed. The church built a three-story building for Sunday school classes, discipleship groups, and more that is still
used today to make disciples.
Pastor Dan Barber is the current pastor of First Baptist Church, and was called to FBC on February 20, 2012. Under Pastor Dan’s guidance, the church has seen growth both in numbers and health. The church currently has missions partnerships in three different
countries around the world (Haiti, Romania, and Kenya).
The church has focused its mission and vision around a key statement: FBC exists to see lives changed and people sent by the gospel of Jesus Christ as we seek to proclaim the gospel until all have heard. This mission is upheld by five pillars which shape
the nature of ministry at FBC: authentic worship, biblical community, equipping the next generation, expository preaching, and missions.
About the Position:
The Youth Pastor is responsible for promoting the spiritual growth of students connected with the church and its outreach to other students by providing Christian teaching, leadership, and mentoring to lead the youth towards a life-enabling relationship
with God in Jesus Christ. This position is primarily responsible for students in grades six through twelve.
What We Are Searching For / Qualifications:
The following describes many of the characteristics of the ideal candidate for the Youth Pastor:
A bachelor’s degree is required. Further education in masters or seminary program is preferred.
Five to 10 years of experience preferred in student ministry.
- Be committed to holiness and developing a personal walk with God in order to model and lead others in their faith.
- If married, love spouse as Christ loved the church. If a parent, discipline children to know God and love Him.
- Pursue professional, personal, and spiritual development.
- A strong commitment to assisting the ministries of the church in fulfilling their mission and vision.
- Energy and enthusiasm particularly around students, yet able to exude a calming influence when needed.
- Carry a posture of strength, approachability, and humility.
- Strong, demonstrated relationship with Jesus Christ, guided by a commitment to following the principles spelled out in the Bible for living a life of thankful service to God.
- A demonstrated high level of integrity, guided by a sound set of ethical principles.
- Doctrinal position that matches that of the First Baptist Church Family
- Initiative and drive; a self-starting hard worker.

Sumter has an extension campus of USC with 1500 students, and two other colleges in town, including Morris College and Central Carolina Technical School, featuring a large nursing program. Sumter also has 22 public school, a large 5A High School with excellent
sports and arts, and 9 private schools. Affordable housing and a low cost of living make it an attractive place for families to settle in.
Sumter County's approximately 104,000 citizens arrived through heritage, Shaw Air Force Base, a large industrial base, and retirees looking for a pleasing year-round climate and convenient location to all the Carolinas have to offer. Sumter is centrally
located, only a 90-minute drive to the state's beautiful beaches and a short three-hour drive to the Blue Ridge Mountains. Sumter is the 8th largest city in South Carolina and truly is in the middle of everything!
