Job Description:

The Lead Pastor at West End is one of the most amazing ministry leadership positions in the fourth largest city in the U.S. The facility is located in the crosshairs of millions of people who are far from God but open to the Good News of Jesus. The building has had a major renovation and is positioned to make a great impact for the Kingdom of God. With the right leader, this mission will be able to use the resources and passion of an outward focused church to grow a significant, well-respected and influential ministry in Houston. The Lead Pastor will have to be highly relational, eager to connect with non-believers, and able to mobilize a very committed core group of 300.

ABOUT WEST END DISTRICT -HOUSTON, TX:

Great restaurant and bar scene along the Washington corridor-along the western edge of downtown Houston. Urban living, yet just down the street from one of Houston’s largest parks, Memorial Park. Memorial Park is home to a wide range of outdoor activity areas and facilities, miles of multi-use trails and a top-rated golf course.

Young professionals are pouring into the area--one of Houston’s hottest neighborhoods with lots of new development, a rich social scene, proximity to all the cultural features of Houston. This is a great place to live and an area in desperate need of a church that reaches people with the Gospel of Jesus Christ. This is a tough mission field because people are busy, in the world and of the world and have a little money, which gives the impression that they don’t need God. This is a post-Christian community but ready to respond to God’s love.

ABOUT RIVER POINTE CHURCH

Patrick and Lisa Kelley founded River Pointe Church in December of 1996 with four other families. Much to Patrick’s surprise, the church grew quickly since that first living room service. Over the course of the first eight a half years, River Pointe was one of the largest portable churches in the country, moving five 48-foot trailers of equipment in and out each Sunday to have church. In 2005, River Pointe moved into its permanent 96-acre site, perfectly situated near the intersection of two major freeways (I-69/The Grand Pkwy) in one of the most diverse and fastest growing counties in the U.S.; Richmond, Fort Bend County, Texas.

In 2012, River Pointe went portable once again starting its first satellite campus in the neighboring suburb of Missouri City, Texas as a number of families thought the original campus was too far away to invite their non-believing friends. Averaging about 550 in weekly attendance at this location, River Pointe purchased 18 acres of land and plans to break ground for a future permanent home in 2018.

In 2015, River Pointe started the third campus inside the loop in Houston. Soon after launching, River Pointe merged with West End Baptist Church in order to save an amazing facility located in the heart of mid-town. In order to preserve the heritage of a church dating back to 1895, River Pointe decided to call this campus West End Church. This campus is reaching millennials and empty nesters who are migrating back toward Houston’s city center. River Pointe completed a +$6million renovation in 2016. The campus is located at 802 Shepherd Drive and is the geographic center of the west side of downtown Houston with one of the highest population densities in the Houston area.

River Pointe with now more than 5000 in average weekly attendance, has always purposed to reach the Houston area in a relational way. Patrick came to believe that Christ was real because of a friend that loved him without condition and was more interested in being his friend than reforming his behavior. As a result, River Pointe has a culture that is safe, open, authentic, engaging, and welcoming--- with a commitment reaching out and relating to others well before they ever believe in Christ. Patrick often says, “I believe that the mission of the church is to continue to redemptive work of Jesus. We exist for those outside a relationship with Christ and outside the walls of the church.” “We want believers to grow deep in their faith so they care about the things God’s cares about.”

JOB DESCRIPTION

Overview – The Lead Pastor at West End is responsible for the overall ministry, spiritual growth, and effectiveness of the campus. The position directs staff and lay leaders to live out the core values of the church in the redemptive work to which God has called River Pointe in the Great Commandment and Great Commission. The Lead Pastor is the person whom people see as the leader and in charge of the campus. This position requires proactive forward thinking to shape and lead the mission to reach the surrounding community. The Lead Pastor reports directly to the Senior Pastor.

Outward Focus: The primary target of the mission are those outside the faith, and the Campus Pastor sets the tone for effective evangelism. This is accomplished, in part, by building a receptive culture, and leading people to care about their friends who do not have a relationship with Jesus Christ. The Campus Pastor is the “keeper of the culture” making sure the outsider is expected, welcomed, and connects.

Everybody Works: The Campus Pastor ensures that our people are plugged into the mission of the church. This requires direct recruitment as well as leading leaders to recruit, train and deploy others to serve in the many different ministries. Serving and giving your life away is considered an important part of spiritual formation, and is strategic in our discipleship efforts.

Community Counts: The main discipleship strategy at River Pointe/West End is small groups. The Campus Pastor continually recruits, trains, and encourages small group leaders, while working with the Small group's staff at the Richmond Campus. The small group is the best place for the congregation to receive and provide pastoral care to one another. As the campus grows in attendance, growing the number of small groups is vital to long-term success. A sense of community is needed at West End through a variety of church-wide events, small groups, and special classes.

Additionally, there is a need to engage the community surrounding West End through mission efforts to those in need and impoverished. The Lead Pastor determines how the people of West End help people who need help and develops relationships with agencies that serve our city.

Relevant Truth: The Lead Pastor works with River Pointe staff and leaders to make truth taught in Scripture applicable and relevant to people’s daily life. This involves supervising children’s staff and youth leaders to make sure programs for different age groups are relevant and connecting with their intended audiences. The Lead Pastor will have the opportunity to preach at the campus. The frequency of teaching at West End and/or the Richmond Campus will be based on giftedness and effectiveness. The Lead Pastor will be given every opportunity to earn the right to be heard and be seen as the Pastor for those attending West End.

Other: The Lead Pastor manages the West End operational campus budget and understands how to run the day-to-day operation of the mission. The operational load for the West End mission includes security, marketing, development, and facilities. The River Pointe business office and facilities department provides support for many needed functions, but this position coordinates with the other ministry departments of the church. The Lead Pastor is responsible for leading staff well and handling personnel issues on the campus. The Lead Pastor makes sure West End doesn’t operate independently of River Pointe, but in harmony, as 1 church in 3 locations.
