Job Description:

The Director of Music and Arts will provide leadership for both contemporary and traditional worship at Advent Lutheran Church.  He/she will work closely with the Senior Pastor, staff, and volunteers to plan, prepare, and execute all worship services and churchwide events (i.e. VBS, Lenten and Advent celebrations, arts camps, etc.).  The Director of Music and Arts will also define, develop, and implement overarching arts ministry objectives that will support the mission of Advent Lutheran Church.   


Core Responsibilities

  • Serve as accompanist for all styles of worship

  • Collaborate with Senior Pastor and worship staff on all worship planning elements including contemporary and traditional liturgies, music selection, visual arts, and dramatic arts

  • Utilize varied resources for worship planning, including, but not limited to, Sundays and Seasons, CCLI, and

  • Assist office staff in preparing bulletins for worship services and promotional materials for special events

  • Select and prepare music, schedule rehearsals, and provide direction for choir, worship team, instrumentalists, and handbell choir

  • Cultivate an environment that encourages volunteers to participate in all music and arts ministries

  • Teach music classes at Advent Lutheran Preschool to students ages 18 months to 4 years and direct short performances for Christmas and graduation

Other Responsibilities

  • Attend weekly staff meetings and monthly ministry board meetings

  • Coordinate scheduling and provide leadership for all special music and arts events

  • Develop and implement new music and arts opportunities, especially for children, youth, and families

  • Work closely with technology team members and staff on upgrades to sound and video equipment used in worship

  • Maintain a database of all music used and complete copyright reporting when required


  • Strong commitment to the Christian faith; familiarity with the ELCA and Revised Common Lectionary is helpful

  • Piano proficiency required, including the use of leadsheets

  • Music degree or equivalent combination of education and experience

  • Competency in conducting required

  • Broad knowledge of all styles of worship music, including liturgies, and how to implement them effectively

  • Ability to create vocal and instrumental arrangements preferred

  • Knowledge of theatre arts and experience using drama in worship preferred

  • Working knowledge of sound and video equipment and how to utilize technology in worship

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office software

  • Willingness to think creatively and apply meaningful creativity to all worship experiences

  • Ability to encourage and equip volunteers regardless of experience level

  • Contagious enthusiasm for worship, music and arts, and sharing the joy of knowing Jesus Christ
