Reports to:          Senior Director of Worship and Connecting Ministries

Effective:            Immediately

Directly Supervises: Organist

Status:              Part-time (20-24 hours weekly) with set hours Weds. & Sun.

FLSA:               Non-Exempt


Position Summary

The Traditional Music Director will provide leadership for traditional worship at St. James UMC. The Music Director will maintain responsibility over the preparation and execution of traditional music and choir participation, along with the recruitment, equipping and leadership of volunteers within the chancel choir. Additionally, the director will also work closely with the Senior Director of Worship and Connecting and additional worship & arts staff to interact effectively with ministry leaders, volunteers, and staff members of St. James UMC to define and implement overarching ministry objectives. These efforts will be in line to support the mission of the church to make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world.

Required Functions

  • Oversee the planning, and execution of traditional worship services under the leadership of the Senior Director of Worship and Connecting, including the oversight of all chancel choir functions. This also includes the leading of hymns or delegation to designated song leaders.
  • Assist the Senior Director of Worship and Connecting in developing the overall worship and arts ministries and a culture that provides for and encourages spiritual growth through Passionate Worship
  • Cultivate an environment that attracts volunteers to be part of all music and production ministries
  • Attract, connect, train, and sustain ministry volunteers and teams to execute the vision for all worship and arts ministries
  • Devote his/her personal and professional life to being an example of what it means to follow Jesus Christ, live a life of worship, and walk in His grace
  • Directing of chancel choir and involved in leading worship as required; assisting with contemporary worship leadership as needed

Other Responsibilities

  • Shared leadership with other worship staff members in all worship services, regular and occasional, as necessary
  • Maintain and manage scheduling for all accompaniment for traditional worship services and chancel choir rehearsals
  • Assist in the planning and execution all weekly and seasonal worship services and special events alongside all worship & arts staff team members
  • Regular participation in creative team meetings, worship and arts staff meetings, and staff chapel as schedule allows and involvement in specific staff/church-wide events and activities
  • Maintain specific office hours for communication purposes
  • Advise Senior Director of Worship & Connecting on ministry spending and budget for purchase requests
  • Lead/direct small ensembles, instrumentalists, handbells, etc. as needed
  • All other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Senior Director of Worship and Connecting

 Minimum Qualifications

  • Strong commitment to the Christian faith and to the theology of the United Methodist Church; familiarity with the United Methodist Church structure, mission opportunities, and resources is helpful
  • Bachelor’s degree from a four-year college or university, or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Willing to adhere to the St. James UMC Staff Policies and Statement of Ethics, to be loyal to the Senior Pastor and church leadership, and to be faithful to St. James UMC vision, values and mission
  • Experience and knowledge in traditional worship planning, worship flow, creative elements and the United Methodist Hymnal
  • Able to pray, teach and work well with others in a team system
  • Competency in piano/organ is preferred

Physical Requirements

  • Physical requirements include prolonged sitting and prolonged viewing of computer monitor, standing for an hour or more at a time, lifting, moving and setup of equipment
