Position Summary

The Director of Music and Worship is a full-time position responsible for the oversight and operation of a comprehensive Christ-centered ministry of music. While not an ordained position, this role assumes a pastoral presence, expressing a heart for people’s spiritual development and emotional well-being; helping them draw closer to the redeeming and saving power of Jesus Christ.


Classification and Relationships

Status: Full-time, exempt

Reports to: Senior Pastor/Head of Staff

Direct Reports: Organist

Relationships: Program staff, Worship team, music groups, and Audio Visual and Lighting (AVL) team    


Personal Qualifications

  • Possesses a strong commitment to Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior and exhibits obedience and reverence for His Word; candidate is a mature believer able to clearly communicate faith
  • Commits to, and is doctrinally aligned with the visions, belief, and values of Eastminster Presbyterian Church and ECO as reflected in the Essential Tenets  
  • Has a joyful spirit, a passionate heart for worship, and feels called to express eternal truths and love of Christ through music to a congregation of all ages
  • Thinks creatively and strategically to initiate change as led by the Spirit and affirmed by ministry leadership
  • Possesses gifts for leadership, administration, encouragement, shepherding, and worship
  • Able to pass US and Georgia background check 

Professional Qualifications

  • Minimum Bachelor’s degree in a music related field (Master’s degree preferred)
  • Evinces strength in choral conducting, and possess a high degree of musical excellence in instrumental and vocal performance
  • Able to lead well in both traditional and contemporary worship settings
  • Proficiency in the use of the following software and technology: ProPresenter, Planning Center Online, and Essential Microsoft Applications such as Microsoft Word, and PC and Macintosh operating systems
  • Evinces strength in choral conducting, and possess a high degree of musical excellence in instrumental and vocal performance 

Primary Responsibilities 

  • Manage short and long-range worship planning through Planning Center Online in collaboration with the Senior Pastor/Head of Staff and other program staff members
  • Recruit for and lead the musical and spiritual development of all music teams- Currently: Adult Chancel Choir, “The Road” Praise Band, AVL team, Eastminster Ringers (Handbell Choir), “KidChoir” (K-5th grade), “ReSound” Youth Chorus and Praise band (Both Middle and High School respectively)
  • Identify and develop volunteer music leadership from within the music ministry
  • Schedule participation of at least one choir or ensemble for each worship service every Sunday morning
  • Provide clear communication to all music groups, and parents when applicable, about schedule, Sunday service presentations, and extra rehearsals and services
  • Work with the church organist to plan music for the traditional worship service, additional worship services, and other events through the year
  • Hire substitute and guest musicians as needed, and coordinate for their pay and performance
  • Develop, manage, and maintain the music library
  • Administrate the purchase of all music and music supplies as they relate to the work of any of the ensembles of the church
  • Manage the child protection policy requirements for the music ministry

Logistical Functions

  • Submit all music information and announcements of the weekly worship service(s) to the church office for multi-platform publication in a timely manner and work with the Director of Communications and other staff members on the weekly worship bulletin
  • Rehearse and direct musical groups, including adult, youth, and children’s choirs and praise teams, the handbell ensemble, “The Road” praise band, and other ensembles that might be established
  • Coordinate and plan with the Senior Pastor/Head of Staff the music for all regular and special worship services, in addition but not limited to: Christmas Eve, Ash Wednesday, and Holy Week
  • Develop worship slides weekly via ProPresenter in collaboration with pastors and worship leaders
  • Attend and facilitate meetings of the Worship Team as an ex officio staff member
  • With respect to weddings, work with the Senior Pastor/Head of Staff, church organist, and other appropriate teams to coordinate musical selections in accordance with the current EPC wedding policy. Note: the wedding party shall remunerate the DMW separately
  • Responsible for the maintenance of all instruments in the church
  • Contribute relevant articles to the church newsletter and other media as appropriate
  • Attend the weekly staff meetings and other meetings as requested by the Senior Pastor/Head of Staff
  • Contribute monthly report to, and as needed attend Session (Church Leadership) meetings
  • With respect to funerals, work with the Senior Pastor/Head of Staff, church organist, and family regarding musical selections. Note: the funeral party will remunerate the DMW separately
  • Other duties as assigned by the Senior Pastor/Head of Staff

Strategic Functions

  • Develop a music ministry that passionately and energetically engages covenant partners (church members), music participants, and the broader community with the EPC mission statement, and leading them in exuberant, genuine worship
  • In partnership with the program staff, provide creative and meaningful leadership to EPC’s overall ministry strategy
  • Identify long range budgetary needs for the worship and music ministries, and communicate these to the Worship team and program staff
