Job Description:

Washington Community Fellowship is a multi-denominational church affiliated with Virginia Mennonite Conference of Mennonite Church USA.  We are located on Capitol Hill in Washington, DC, and seek a qualified Pastor to lead our 35-year-old fellowship.  We are a mission-focused, faithful and conviction-filled community of roughly 100 regular attenders and members most of whom participate in small groups.  We were founded as a church committed to crossing divides of class, political affiliation, gender, race, and other cultural barriers by focusing on the unifying person and message of Jesus Christ.

With our current pastor retiring at the end of January 2018, we are seeking new pastoral leadership.  Along with leadership of our Sunday morning service and our lay-leadership organizational structure, we desire a Pastor to lead the spiritual life and ministry of the congregation into new areas as God directs.

Specifically, we seek an individual who finds joy ministering in our urban, rapidly changing neighborhood and who possesses the following areas of gifting and demonstrated experience:

a)      Effective, dynamic, winsome, visionary leadership oriented to growing the church, its congregation, and presence in the neighborhood;

b)      Sensitive to God’s vision and direction, willing to lead the congregation into new, life-giving ministry;

c)      Confessing and teaching a high view of Jesus as the Savior of the world and Lord of the universe;

d)      Confessing and teaching a high view of Scripture as the Word of God for building the faith and life of the church;

e)      Confessing and teaching a high view of the church as evidence of the present Kingdom of God transforming lives by the Holy Spirit and offering new purpose and meaning in the world;

f)       Ability to work collaboratively with, disciple and mentor elders, deacons, and other volunteer leaders;

g)      Stimulated by work in a multi-denominational setting and willing to promote a healthy diversity of faith traditions and practice (while standing firmly on own convictions);

h)      Stimulated by work with an educated, thoughtful congregation willing to grapple with difficult issues in love, but not always agreement;

i)        Ability to foster strong, healthy relational connection among various constituencies (deacons, elders, and the congregation) within the church;

j)        Excellent, nuanced, theologically rich, Bible-based preaching with strong application for our daily lives;

k)      Affirmation of the Apostle’s Creed, WCF’s Covenant of Membership, and Core Values; and

l)        Hold Masters of Divinity from an accredited theological seminary and ordination in a recognized Christian denomination (or on an ordination track).

a)      Experience planning and coordinating worship services;

b)      Experience growing an established congregation; and

c)      Experience in Pastoral Care for diverse ages and needs as well as coordination of pastoral care teams for longer-term challenges; and

d)      Ability to identify and pursue strategies that promote a balance of perspectives among the congregation (e.g. maintaining diverse socio-economic or political backgrounds) so that the congregation increasingly represents the diversity of the body of Christ.
