Lead Pastor Job Description

The Lead Pastor is responsible for the spiritual instruction and strategic leadership of the congregation, staff, and ministries of the church. He is accountable to the Elder Board and provides supervision for all staff.


Bachelors degree from a Bible College or Seminary with a continuing commitment to learning and study.
Ten or more years service in church ministry with at least five years preaching experience.
Experience supervising pastoral and lay staff.
Be in agreement with the doctrine statement of Mountainview Christian Church.
Willing to commit to the MVCC Standards of Biblical conduct for Leaders.


Provide Spiritual Leadership:

by effectively preaching and teaching Biblical truths which strengthen core beliefs, faith, and an understanding of God's wisdom for life.
by extending the Gospel outreach to the greater community.
by working with the pastoral and administrative staff to consistently provide weekend services that inspire, challenge, and encourage the congregation to honor God.
by encouraging stewardship, generosity and caring for the needs of others.
by understanding and applying the principles of evangelism to the overall vision and mission of the church.

Provide Pastoral Leadership:

through participation on the Elder Board.
by providing for the oversight and shepherding of the congregation.
by participating in the development of the mission and goals of the church.
by coaching, training, and developing the pastoral staff in their professional and spiritual life.
by providing counsel to church members.
through personal visits with church members.

Provide Outreach Leadership:

by leading the congregation in reaching out to our neighborhood, the greater community, and the world for the purpose of bringing man and God together through Christ.
by supporting existing programs and developing new strategies to reach those in need.
by maintaining contact with all supported church missionaries and missions.

Provide Administrative Leadership:

by serving on the Management Team.
by supervising and evaluating the pastoral staff.
by participating in the screening and hiring of non-ordained staff and the calling of ordained staff.
by participating in the development of operational plans and budgets to support the mission and goals of the church.
by building a sense of teamwork among church staff.
by effectively working with the staff to coordinate the ministries of the church and to facilitate communication.
by fostering and supporting a climate that encourages volunteer involvement.
by helping to develop, revise, and implement policies and procedures that make for efficient operation of ministry.
through accurate recording and reporting of activities and programs.
through effective oral and written communication.

First and foremost our Pastor candidate must meet the qualifications outlined in 1 Timothy 3 and Titus 1. These we have summarized on page two. Below we have put forth both personal qualities and professional qualities that supplement the Apostle Paul??s qualifications and are deemed by the committee to be important and desirous qualities of our future Pastor. A substantial amount of input was derived from the congregation and incorporated into this list. This list will provide a good platform for prioritizing and identifying the leadership traits we seek at Mountainview Christian Church.

Personal Qualities

Maturity - Possesses wisdom and understanding achieved through a varied life experience
Man of prayer - Understands where our strength comes from and seeks God’s wisdom and favor, through prayer, in the circumstances of life
Man of God - Esteems right living principles in his life that honor our Heavenly Father
Has a shepherd’s heart for people and a desire to care for their spiritual needs
The church is his full time calling and passion
Desires to teach and educate the congregation to attain growth and maturity

Possesses a strong pulpit presence and is able to deliver a compelling Bible based message
