Associate Pastor Position
The Position: Principal Responsibilities
High Point Church is seeking an Associate Pastor who will be responsible for Ministry and Staff Development. This is a new position reporting to the lead pastor. The position’s principal responsibilities include:
Providing leadership and direction to current staff ministry leaders with emphasis on both their personal development and the growth and development of their respective areas which include Youth Ministries, Children’s Ministries, and Worship Arts. We also anticipate this position providing some assistance and guidance to the Staff Intern program. Providing leadership and direction to the Small Group Ministry as well as largely volunteer led ministries which include Hospitality/Assimilation, Organized Service, and Adult Education. (These have some staff resources that assist the lay volunteers, e.g. Organized Service which is led by the Deacons and Deaconesses and supported by staff to a degree.) Fostering an organizational climate that emphasizes both individual and team development that values and encourages lay-led initiatives, and at the same time, maintains a balance among the various ministries that enables High Point to achieve its overall mission and objectives. Preaching 6 to 12 times per year.
Required Competencies and Skills
Leadership skills that reflect servant-leader values, that engender trust among staff and members with whom he regularly works. Strong interpersonal skills that enable him to provide guidance to staff and comfort to members and attenders seeking spiritual support, particularly in times of critical need. Staff management skills that position him as their leader, mentor, and coach--the person to whom they will look for direction in their area of ministry and for direct and timely feedback on their effectiveness. Organization and administrative skills to manage the breadth of ministries under his direction and to maintain clear direction for those he is leading. Capacity to provide faithful expository communication of the Word and a demonstrated passion for its truth.
Baseline Experience and Background
Sound theological education. M.Div or better is strongly preferred. Minimum of 10 years of ministry experience with emphasis on at least two of the areas that are under the direction of this position and no less than 3 years of staff or lay leadership development as part of that experience. A clear record of success and effectiveness in the ministries that he has directed.
WE REMAIN FLEXIBLE (TO A DEGREE) IN THE SPECIFIC EXPERIENCE LEVELS AND COMPETENCIES PREVIOUSLY OUTLINED AND ENCOURAGE POTENTIAL CANDIDATES TO APPLY IF THEY HAVE THE REQUISITE HANDS-ON EXPERIENCE, CREDENTIALS, AND MATURITY FOR A KEY MINISTRY LEADERSHIP ROLE.
About High Point Church
High Point Church is in its fourth year of growth after a period of decline. Weekly attendance now ranges between 400 and 500 resulting in our returning to two Sunday services in March, 2012. The present building and parking would accommodate about 1,500 to 1,800 without further building. The facility itself is excellent and in a very desirable location.
The elders and lead pastor believe the development of our core ministries and staff is the next critical step in making our church stronger and better equipped to carry out its mission in Madison.
High Point Church is an independent evangelical protestant church in the Baptist tradition, leaning toward reformed theology and emphasizing Gospel centeredness in its teaching. We are congregationally governed and elder led. High Point is a Willow Creek Association church but is not patterned in the seeker-sensitive model. Rather, we aim to be seeker intelligible and focus on spiritual growth, utilizing expositional preaching about 85% of the time. We have a strong global missions ministry focusing on university missions and unreached peoples in “inaccessible” nations.

Interested candidates should do research on the city of Madison early in their consideration of applying. Madison is a very specific kind of town because it is the state capital, a university center, politically volatile, deeply secular, and yet has a strong Christian minority. It has a highly educated population that is fiercely proud of its political and social climate, highly unionized and, at the same time, embraces its rural, state-wide identity. It is quintessentially Midwestern in culture. It is liberal but in a very different way than other parts of the country. A person relocating here must be willing to love the city, not just the church.
