Job Description:
Tucker First is a United Methodist church situated in the community of Tucker, Georgia, a block off Main Street. As part of the Atlanta metro area, Tucker has an active and diverse community. Tucker First UMC is a vital part of this community and known for its music program for all ages and leadership in community activities. Tucker First’s student ministry has a core group of 40-50 youth and is poised to expand under the right leadership. Youth activities have focused on traditional types of ministry with anticipation that new ministries would be started soon. Coupled with great facilities and parent resources/support, the person hired to lead this position will have a great foundational structure to expand the ministry.

1. Youth Participation
• Establish a program that engages an average of over 40 of the Junior High and Senior High students weekly in some program of the church.
• Plan and promote all major events and weekly programming in such a way that the targeted number of youth participates.
• Conduct planning sessions that include input from the total youth group.

2. Contact Work
• Know the names of every youth and parent on the rolls.
• Personally e-mail or call at least 3 inactive students (or parents) a week.
• Contact each youth on the youth directory at least quarterly.
• Spend face-to-face time with every student on the youth directory at least once a year.
• Be visible at student events on school campuses at least 2-3 times per month, and invite volunteer leaders to accompany you at those visits.
• Provide exceptional and personal follow up to all first-time visitors within 24 hours of
his/her visit.

3. Volunteer Leader Development
• Recruit all weekly youth ministry volunteers no later than 1 month before they are to begin.
• Insure that all weekly youth ministry volunteers complete an application before they become involved and attend training given biannually for expected responsibilities and safe sanctuary guidelines.
• Meet personally with each weekly youth ministry volunteer at least once a year, and check in with them at least quarterly.
4. Event Planning & Programming
• Complete event notebooks for each major event, and update those notebooks after
event is complete.
• Ensure that youth schedule coordinates with church schedule
• Programming will include a one year schedule for major events
• Programming will include a 90 day rolling schedule for routine events, and leeway for “spontaneous” programming approximately 20% of the time.
• Programming will be based on curriculum template selected by the church.
5. Administrative
• Develop and distribute control documents in a timely fashion (the Youth Directory, the Youth Ministry Calendar, Calendar requests, Event and Trip registration Forms, and Leaders Directory).
• Keep compliance documents up-to-date and distributed to all involved parties
(Copyright licensing, background checks on volunteers and staff, etc.).

6. Communication
• Communicate with the church staff, particularly the Senior Pastor, in such a way that
they are informed and enthusiastically supportive of the priorities and programs of
the youth ministry.
• Use multiple communication tools, including social media, to maintain regular contact with active participants, inactive youth and the church as a whole.
• See that the TFUMC youth web page is regularly updated.

7. Troubleshooting
• Troubleshoot problems in the youth ministry in a way that honors the concerns of
those who bring them, and offer timely, creative solutions to problems in the youth

8. Ministry Needs
• Ensure that the “in-between the cracks” needs of the youth ministry are handled in a professional and timely manner, including Bulletin boards, Photography, Attendance, Newsletters, Bulletin and Church School Announcement, Forms and Registration

9. Personal Development

o Living by the Tucker First Youth Leader Covenant
o Living out the values of the Tucker First Youth Ministry
o Being supportive and enthusiastic about pursuing the mission and goals of the Tucker First Youth Ministry
o Taking the equivalent of two days off weekly (at least one full day)
o To connect with a church mentor
b. Attending
o Sunday morning worship, regularly visible in both services throughout the year
o Sunday Night Youth Group
o Church Staff Meeting
o Regular meeting with Associate Pastor
o Quarterly youth council meetings
o Attend some church government meetings (i.e. Church Council, Finance)

c. Leadership
o Teaching on Sunday mornings as needed
o Participating in worship

d. Initiative-Taking
o Teaching or leading Bible studies in such a way that a volunteer is always sharing the responsibility for that part of the ministry
o Seeking to be informed about any special victories, concerns or challenges, hospitalizations being faced by the youth and his or her family and, as often as reasonable, pass that information on to the youth leaders for personal follow up
o Attending youth ministry major events enthusiastically, thanking volunteers and helping out with clean up, and enjoyed afterglow with key volunteers and youth staff
o Being available for youth and their families as needs arise for pastoral care and support
o Preparing an annual budget for the youth ministry to be proposed to the Finance Committee
o Participating in Conference Youth events as much as practical.

e. Preparation
o Reading at least one Christian book a year
o Reading at least one additional youth or college age ministry book / training tapes a year
o Attending at least one week of continuing education each year (funding provided by TFUMC)

Position is Full Time and salary will be in the $35,000-$45,000 range based on experience and education.
