The Director of Worship and Music is responsible for overall leadership of Bethany Covenant Church’s Worship and Music Ministry. The person in this role will create a church-wide environment that encourages and inspires people of all ages, skill levels and style preferences to offer their musical gifts in order to glorify God. This position requires a confident, humble servant-leader with a vital personal faith and passion for Christ. A broad and diverse musical proficiency is essential, as well as an appreciation for both traditional and contemporary worship styles.
While encouraging broad participation in each service, the Director will be the primary worship leader for the contemporary worship services for the church. The Director should have a deep knowledge of Scripture and be sensitive to the Holy Spirit’s leading of worship in order to gently and joyfully lead the congregation into the presence of the Lord. The Director should be capable of organizing, overseeing and equipping a variety of music leaders and groups, fostering an atmosphere of dedication and spiritual unity within each group. The Director must also be able to coordinate and work closely with pastoral staff, choir director, technical teams, and others involved in the planning, design and execution of worship services. This position reports to the Senior Pastor.
Plan and design all worship services as part of the pastoral staff.
Work in close consultation with Choir Director, Technical Team, Worship & Music Ministry Team, and Usher Team in the implementation of all services.
Responsible for leading worship in the contemporary services.
Support and develop all musical groups.
- Oversee and encourage leaders of all music groups (e.g., chancel choir, praise band, youth and children’s choirs, bell choirs, jazz band, etc.).
- Recruit, encourage, and equip volunteers to use and develop their musical gifts.
- As the development of a 3rd service progresses, work closely with pastoral staff and volunteers to oversee worship for that service.
Serve as direct supervisor to Choir Director, Organist and a potential new position of Worship Technology Coordinator.
Serve as leader of Worship & Music Ministry Team.
Appreciate and understand (or be willing to learn) the Covenant denomination’s musical heritage and perspectives on worship.
Work with staff and lay leaders to foster the church’s vision.
Plan and encourage special music, both instrumental and vocal (soloists, duets, etc.) to maximize wide participation of congregants with musical abilities.
Plan and encourage community outreach events, such as concerts.
Prepare and manage Worship and Music Ministry budget as needed.
Strong leadership, management, and delegating skills
Substantial coordination, communication, planning and organizing skills
Solid interpersonal and teamwork skills; very flexible working with staff, lay leaders, and congregants
Encourager; able to foster atmosphere of dedication and spiritual unity
Strong ability to recruit, train, and equip numerous lay volunteers of various ages, skill levels and style preferences

Broad and diverse musical proficiency, particularly in contemporary music
- However, must also must possess appreciation and knowledge of traditional hymns
Extensive knowledge of Scripture in general
Knowledge of how hymns and spiritual songs relate to Scripture
Must be able to pray, give testimony, and speak publicly
Must possess pastoral skills of wisdom, sensitivity, and discernment
Experience with technical aspects of worship (e.g., av equipment, musical equipment, worship software, etc.)
College degree or developmental equivalent
5 years of experience in worship and music ministry
Must possess or be willing to pursue a ministry license within the Evangelical Covenant Church
