.W Evangelical Church/Seoul USA

Colorado Springs, Colorado, United States

Date Posted:
Associate Pastor - Combo Positions
Church Size:
50 to 100
Job Type:
.W Evangelical Church/Seoul USA
Job Description:
The ".W" in .W Evangelical Church stands for DOTW, or Doers of the Word. This is a reference to Jesus’ admonition in Matthew 7:24, “Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them is like a wise man who built his house upon the rock."

The .W Church is a congregation of the Evangelical Church of North America (http://theevangelicalchurch.org/), a Wesleyan-Arminian holiness denomination. In the spirit of the early Methodists, our church focus is on equipping member families to become "living Bibles" in their own individual spheres of influence through hearing and doing the word. Our weekly gatherings combine high-church liturgical worship, monthly "do the word" training events, extensive Scripture and hymn memorization, and a family-focused system of tithing wherein each household is charged, equipped, and held accountable to distribute their offering themselves (rather than giving it to the church to distribute).

The .W Church is both a Colorado congregation and, through the aegis of nonprofit Seoul USA (www.seoulusa.org), a church planting and disciple making ministry that establishes and oversees a growing network of similar congregations in South Korea, China, and North Korea.

The Associate Pastor/Partner Manager will join .W Senior Pastor (and Seoul USA co-founder) Eric Foley (www.ericfoley.com) and our staff of 15 in Colorado and Asia in:

1. Overseeing the .W Evangelical Church in Colorado Springs;
2. Responding to requests from church congregations and ministries around the world to train them in the .W model;
3. Traveling to Asia to equip and train the .W Evangelical Church leaders and affiliated discipleship program leaders in South Korea, North Korea, and China.

Because of this three-part focus, it is essential for the candidate to be able to function equally well in a parish setting, an office environment, and in the mission field.

Responsibilities for this Colorado Springs-based position include:

1. Teaching and serving as Assistant Dean at Underground University (http://www.seoulusa.org/ministries/underground-university/), a year-long program operated by Seoul USA to train North Korean defectors in South Korea to serve as missionaries to wherever the NK church is found. (This teaching and oversight occurs primarily by weekly videoconference from Colorado, supplemented by the field visits to our office in Korea.)

2. Speaking in traditional churches and at Christian conferences in order to train other churches and ministries in the .W model.

3. Handling electronic media (blog posts, website updates, Twitter and Facebook posts).

4. Creating content, including sermons to be translated for use by our lay pastors and household leaders, as well as blog posts, podcasts, YouTube content (see http://www.youtube.com/user/DOTWPublishing?feature=mhee), curriculum development, and website and newsletter articles. (We write material in the spirit of John Wesley--to be preached by lay pastors whom we train and oversee to lead family worship in their own homes and spheres of influence. This is the heart of the .W model.)

5. Worship teaching. By that we mean a leader who can train congregation members in robust family worship: singing, Scripture memorization, prayer, and preaching. Rather than doing a song set each week, we learn one song each week to underscore the Scripture to be heard and done that week. Hymnology is theology?and the worship leader needs to be able to help people learn to sing well, learn the lyrics, learn how to practice the song during the week with their family, and learn how to sing it without a five piece band and a PowerPoint presentation.

6. Reporting and project management. Most of the job takes place within an office environment where we are networked using high-tech tools to our underground and above-ground congregations in Asia. Office skills truly are as important as preaching and teaching in this position.

7. Field oversight. Trips (typically quarterly) to Asia, combined with weekly videoconference management, to ensure that all of our mission congregations are receiving training, support, and accountability.

It is important to emphasize that we are not an American organization operating in Asia. We are an Asian-American organization with legal organizational structure, staff, and physical offices on both continents. Our organizational and church culture is a mix of all of the countries where we work. It takes significant cultural aptitude to work with our partners in the U.S., the Koreas, China, Russia, Europe, South Africa, South America, and Canada, each in different offices, each preferring to be addressed in a different way, each having different strengths and challenges that the bring to their work daily. So if cross-cultural learning tires you out, or if a work environment that’s only partly American makes you uncomfortable, this is not likely the place and people for you.
