Director of Choirs

Epworth United Methodist Church in Gaithersburg, MD (worshiping an average of 200 people) is seeking a committed individual with a desire to serve Christ through choral music. Candidates should be committed to their role as worship leaders and desire to work as part of a ministry team with other musicians (Organist/Pianist and the Director of Praise and Worship) and worship planners under the Senior Pastor.

The ideal candidate for this part-time position is an experienced director (music education preferred but not required), capable of directing choirs during the choir season (September – mid-June) and providing for special music/soloists during the summer months. Choir participation also needed at some special worship services during year.

The director of choirs would be responsible for:
• Directing and strengthening the existing adult Chancel Choir,
• Directing or providing for the direction of the existing Hand bell Choir,
• Building a gospel choir or quartet for the 10:30 CELEBRATE! service and
• Coordinating the direction of Children’s, Youth, and Spanish choirs. [Volunteer directors already in place for Children and Spanish choir. Youth choir open.]

This includes planning and leading weekly rehearsals, selecting and planning choral music in coordination with the Senior Pastor based on worship themes and/or the season of the Christian year, collaborating with other music staff, serving as a worship leader in service, and procuring instrumentalists when needed for various choir presentations.

The Choral Director should possess good relational skills, be flexible, passionate, and skilled in using multiple genres of music including Traditional Hymnody, Classical, Jazz, Contemporary and World (Latin, African, Afro-Cuban) music to bring individuals into relationship with Christ.

Candidate must be committed to being part of a multi-ethnic, bi-lingual (English/Spanish), growing and changing church. Worship service schedule includes ARISE! 9am traditional service with organ, CELEBRATE! 10:30 blend of praise/traditional/gospel music with piano and some organ, and CAMINO DE VIDA! 12noon Spanish service with praise and worship and Spanish choir.

The position is estimated to be 12-15 hours per week and includes two weekly services and potentially three weekly rehearsals (chancel, hand bell, gospel) during choir season.
