BELLAIRE UNITED METHODIST CHURCH IS SEEKING APPLICATIONS
FOR A MUSIC & WORSHIP ARTS DIRECTOR
This full-time position at Bellaire United Methodist Church is responsible for developing worship music and other worship arts for its weekly traditional worship service in a manner that contributes to growth in attendance and enthusiastic participation in worship. The position reports to the senior pastor, as does a separately sought part-time contemporary music director. It is anticipated that the music & worship arts director will lead and rehearse the sanctuary choir for weekly Sunday service(s), and work with the senior pastor and other worship leaders to select the worship music. Additional responsibilities are described below.
Bellaire UMC is a United Methodist church located in Bellaire Texas, a city and community located in central Houston. The church currently conducts one contemporary-style service and one traditional-style service on Sunday mornings in its sanctuary, and conducts a separate Asian-American service simultaneously in its chapel. Together, attendance averages 325 on Sunday mornings. Music is also part of two short communion services held at noon and early evening on Wednesdays.
While responsibility for directing and rehearsing the sanctuary choir is the primary focus of the director’s responsibilities, the director will also be responsible for other segments of our music ministry and worship arts program including children’s choir, a bell choir, and vocal and instrumental ensembles and soloists. The director will work with and/or recruit volunteers or other staff to participate in these groups and, depending on the director’s talents, may lead or participate in these groups as well.
The director will have the responsibility to develop and integrate drama, dance, and visual arts into the current traditional service, as well as develop special programs for Lent, Advent and other important church events. It is anticipated that this position would have responsibility for the music and fine arts in support of a third weekly service, either blended or convergent, if added in the future.
The successful applicant will demonstrate a passion for celebrating traditional style worship through a broad variety of musical styles, including liturgical music as well as popular hymns familiar to all, and be enthusiastic for implementing new components into worship such as dance, drama and audio-visual. Applicants must show the ability to cooperate and work with the pastors, program staff, and volunteer music leaders, and share a desire to expand our music ministries to reach more of those within our neighborhood and community who are not attending a weekly church activity. Bellaire UMC has a vision for a robust music and worship arts program building on the established music program we have enjoyed as a congregation for many years, making it more relevant to many in these modern times, and focused on praise and worship of God, and our Savior, Jesus Christ.
Prior tenure in a music director position in a church of similar or larger size is desirable, together with a college or university degree in music. Salary will be commensurate with experience, education and talent. Benefits include a health insurance program and pension participation. Pension accruals are available after a short tenure.
