Job Description:
American Lutheran Church (ALC) is a Christ-centered congregation emphasizing teaching, worship and prayer as we grow in Christ's image through the power of the Holy Spirit. Located in Rantoul, Illinois, 14 miles north of Champaign-Urbana and 120 miles south of Chicago, ALC is a member of the North American Lutheran Church. We are looking to extend a call to a Youth and Family Minister to lead, reinvigorate, and develop our youth and family ministry and shepherd that ministry toward greater long-term effectiveness.

Position Objectives
The objectives of the position is to provide youth and family ministry expertise and leadership, with the partnership and support of the senior pastor, church council, and congregation, as attitudes and priorities shift toward, promoting, creating and sustaining an environment conducive, inviting and engaging to youth and young families while retaining a Christ-centered, scripturally based, traditional and confessional Lutheran expression.

Understandings and Competencies
The successful candidate must:
o Confess Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior.
o Communicate the Gospel in word and deed (discipleship).
o Work with the Bible (both Old and New Testament) as the Word of God.
o Understand the baptismal journey across a lifetime.
o Know Lutheran theological commitments, especially Augsburg Confession and Catechisms.
o Enjoy being with youth of all ages and all that entails.
o Recognize one person is not enough and be willing and excited to invite other authentic, affirming, and available adults to participate.
o Follow through with people, programs, and projects.
o Understand human and faith development of children, youth, and their family.
o Understand Christian education ministry.
o Understand Spiritual and Faith Practices, including worship, Bible study and prayer.
o Understand the importance of congregational awareness of youth and family ministries.
o Understand and identify one’s own limitations in pastoral care, including counseling and conflict resolution.
o Communicate and teach effectively.

Educational Qualifications
The successful candidate must have at minimum a master’s degree in youth and family ministry or a related field, and/or a master’s degree in divinity with a youth and family emphasis. Experience is preferred, but not required. Ordination is not a requirement.

Job Responsibilities
The successful candidate will:
o Invite youth into God’s Word and the Gospel.
o Assist youth in building a personal relationship with Jesus Christ.
o Create a safe and caring environment for youth that encourages exploring and deepening their Faith.
o Retain and promote traditional Lutheran morals and values
o Minister in crisis to youth and their families.
o Be a life coach to youth.
o Encourage and facilitate youth service, outreach, and mission work.
o Practice and encourage youth leadership development.
o Promote multi-generational understanding/interaction.
o Supervise, coordinate, develop and administer all youth and family focused programs, events, and educational opportunities (Sunday School, Bible School, Youth Group, etc.).
o Work in concert and coordinate with the senior pastor as the principle ministry leadership team.
o Cooperate, include, and collaborate with neighboring Lutheran congregations and other non-Lutheran Christian fellowships.
o Develop rapport with parents and members of the congregation to meet volunteer staffing needs and encourage participation and interaction with youth.

Term of Call and Compensation
The Youth and Family Minister is a full-time call, with the expectation of significant evening and weekend hours. ALC is able to offer a competitive salary, excellent benefits package, and housing.
