DIRECTOR OF STUDENT & YOUNG ADULT MINISTRY
First Presbyterian Church
Farmington, NM

PURPOSE:
To develop and facilitate a biblically based and effective middle/senior high school and young adult ministry at First Presbyterian Church.

ACCOUNTABLE TO:
1. The Director of Student and Young Adult Ministry will be accountable to the Head of Staff (Pastor) and will work under the authority of the Session and the policies of the church.
2. The Director of Student and Young Adult Ministry will work with the Christian Growth Committee, the Youth Board or any other group that Session designates.

QUALIFICATIONS:
1. The Director of Student & Youth Adult Ministry shall be experienced in student and young adult ministry.
2. The Director of Student and Young adult ministry shall be committed to Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior, the authority of Scripture, and the uniqueness and missional nature of Christ’s Church.
3. The Director of Student & Young Adult Ministry shall possess the administrative, organizational and communication skills necessary to perform his or her duties and carry out details, as well as the interpersonal, relational skills for working with young people and adults within the church and the community.
4. Feel called to ministry with middle school/high school students and young adults.
5. Possesses an understanding of and appreciation for Reformed theology.
6. Has knowledge and experience with youth culture, counseling, Biblical studies, and faith development.
7. Committed to both church and non-churched students and young adults.
8. Relates well to young people (perceptive and responsive to their needs) and their parents/guardians.
9. Able to work with students, families, church staff, advisors, teachers and committees.
10. Four-year college degree is preferable with additional training in Biblical studies or youth ministry.

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

MINISTRY DEVELOPMENT
1. Possess a biblical philosophy and model for ministry with middle school, high school students and young adults.
2. Conduct weekly meetings of middle school and senior high school fellowship groups that include Christ centered teaching, worship, fellowship, outreach and service oriented activities.
3. Conduct regular meetings of young adult fellowship that is Christ centered and meets the needs of young adults.
4. Engage in periodic evaluation of the effectiveness of the student and young adult ministry programs in light of the needs of students and young adults and available resources.
5. Incorporate and integrate student/young adult ministry into the church body.
6. Fully comply with First Presbyterian Church’ Child & Youth Protection Policy.
7. Provide for leadership, training, equipping, support and encouragement for student leaders within the student and young adult ministry.
8. Engage and invite new students and young adults to Sunday worship and to regularly planned student and young adult activities.
9. Develop community among diverse student populations.
10. Seek out and participate in a yearly “continuing education” event or conference that builds professional skills related to youth and young adult ministry.

DEVELOPMENT OF LAY LEADERSHIP
1. Coordinate and recruit lay leadership to be involved in and lead in all aspects of the ministry.
2. Provide necessary training, equipping, support, and encouragement for lay leadership.

PROGRAM DEVELOPMENT
1. Locate and use valuable resources relevant to student and young adult ministry.
2. Seek out the necessary resources and training to remain current in areas that impact student and young adult ministry.
3. Provide effective resources to lay leadership.
4. Work with lay leadership in planning and facilitating weekly programs.
5. Assist in the coordination of special events, retreats, camps, and mission trips.

MINISTRY WITH FAMILIES
1. Develop strategies to partner with parents in ministry.
2. Build positive relationships with parents and families.
3. Provide resources, support and training for parents.
4. Involve parents in student ministries where appropriate.
5. Give opportunities for parents to take part and share in ministry.
6. Coordinate with the Director of Children’s Ministries in planning transition activities for incoming middle school students.

ADMINISTRATIVE RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Publish needed information for students, families, and the church.
2. Work in conjunction with church staff in maintaining an up-to-date database.
3. Attend staff meetings and have an effective working relationship with the staff.
4. Develop the Student & Young Adult program budget.
5. Responsible for preparing yearly budget in conjunction with the Head of Staff, the Christian Growth Committee and the Finance Committee.
6. Responsible for preparing yearly programs in conjunction with the Head of Staff, the Christian Growth Committee and the Youth Board.
7. Be familiar with and comply with all church policies.
8. Provide program information for the church web site as a means of communicating with students and young adults.

SPIRITUAL DISCIPLINES
1. Assumes a growing, intimate relationship with Jesus Christ.
2. Assumes a regular prayer life.
3. Have spiritual accountability to a mentor, pastor or individual.
4. Be involved in regular worship and fellowship with the body of Christ at First Presbyterian Church.
5. Must be open to constructive supervision & teachable spirit.
6. Effective time management between students and personal life.

MISCELLANEOUS RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Purchasing equipment, resources, etc. needed to carry out an effective program.

RELATIONSHIPS:
Maintain cooperative working relationships with students, pastor, church staff, specific committees and boards; with Presbytery, Session, Deacons, the congregation, and with other churches in ecumenical efforts.

EMPLOYMENT INFORMATION:
Payroll status: Salaried exempt

Hours: Minimum 40 hrs/week

Vacation: Will be taken with prior approval of Head of Staff and in compliance with personnel policy.

Evaluation: Performance reviews will be conducted no less than annually.

Termination: Termination of employment may be given by either the church or the employee in this position.
