Bel Air United Methodist Church The Director of Children’s and Family Ministries' serves to develop programs and ministries for infants through grade 5 and Family Ministry activities from a Wesleyan perspective. Current programs include Sunday morning church school for all ages; a dynamic, outreach-oriented VBS; and seasonal activities and events for families. The Children's Director is responsible for recruiting, training and overseeing a weekly volunteer group of Sunday school teachers and volunteers. This person involves children in the ministry of the church as a whole, supporting and participating in the church’s vision, worship services and other activities and serves as a vital and contributing member of the church Ministry staff team. This is a full time position. Total compensation package includes health care, pension and continuing education benefits.

TITLE: Director of Children’s and Family Ministries


1. Build and maintain relationships with children and parents

• Build and maintain quality relationships with parents to partner with them in faith-training
• Develop a passionate ministry devoted to children (newborn – 5th grade) and their families, in which kids are intentionally sought, Biblically taught, and shown that they are loved and valued in Christ

2. Develop and lead programs according to the vision and purpose of the Bel Air UMC, to include but not limited to:

• Provide Sunday morning opportunity for worship, education, and relationship building for children in grades K-5 by providing curriculum consistent with the core values of BAUMC
• Develop outreach programs, activities, and events (evangelism) such as Vacation Bible School
• Plan spiritual growth programs, activities, and events that provide opportunities for children and families to worship and fellowship together, learn Biblical truths, and apply them to their lives
• Provide opportunities for children and families to serve the community through mission giving and events
• Provide oversight for Sunday morning ministry, assuring that programs are properly staffed and maintained according to Safe Sanctuary guidelines
• Collaborate with Director of Student Ministries, to bridge between rising sixth graders and older youth to maintain smooth transitions as youth grow into different phases of church experience
• Make contact with visitors to Children and Family activities
• Coordinate and lead Preschool Chapel
• Interview, secure, train, and supervise those who provide Nursery Care

3. Execute a plan to recruit and train the energized and gifted volunteers that are required for Children’s and Family Ministries.

• Provide training for volunteers who work with all children and family ministries programs consistent with the core values of BAUMC and the Safe Sanctuary policy.
• Regularly coach, motivate and encourage all Children’s Ministry volunteers

4. Administrative responsibilities, to include but not limited to:

• Develop and monitor the Children’s and Family Ministry overall budget
• Anticipate and project future resource needs; budget accordingly
• Attend church staff meetings
• Participate in appropriate professional development conferences and seminars
• Provide input for church bulletin, newsletter, website
• Conduct Safe Sanctuary workshops and trainings; Insure that background checks are completed for all adults serving with children and youth
• Serve as ex officio board member of BAUMC children’s outreach programs such as Tiny Tots and Preschool Childcare

5. Perform any other duties as assigned.


• Communicates daily with colleagues in office of Bel Air United Methodist Church.
• Communicates weekly with volunteers and parents.
• Communicates as needed with other pastoral staff.


1. Knowledge, skills & abilities:

• Possess a heart for children and a passion for Children’s and Family Ministry
• Understand the challenges of parenting in today’s changing culture
• Possess ability to affirm United Methodist Church doctrine and practices and the Bel Air United Methodist Church vision, mission and core values
• Demonstrate familiarity with Christian education curriculum and program design, planning and organization
• In a walk with God through a personal , and growing, relationship with Jesus Christ
• Have a passion to lead and train volunteers to share Jesus Christ’s love with children through teaching, serving and building loving relationships
• Strong verbal and written communication skills
• A self starter—highly motivated, creative and energetic
• Ability to be a good role model and set an appropriate example of a work ethic; organized, with skill in prioritizing and managing time
• A team player with effective relational skills – collaborative, coachable and communicative
• Demonstrate an attitude of servant leadership with staff and volunteers
• Exhibit spiritual gifts of hospitality, service, administration, encouragement and mercy

2. Preferred educational level:

• Bachelor’s degree; in Christian Education or Children’s Ministry preferred.

3. Minimum experience

• 3 years experience working with children
• Experience in developing and leading Children’s and Family ministries
• Experience with recruitment, training, and supervision of others, particularly volunteers
• Computer literate

4. Physical Requirements:

• Ability to lift 15 lbs.
• Ability to participate in children’s activities
