Job Description Summary
The small group pastor is responsible for the overall leadership of the First Free small group ministry. As such he will be directing a team of “community pastors” and small group leaders as they lead our small groups in spiritual growth, deep and authentic relationships, and blessing the community.
Staff Position and Accountability
The Small Group Pastor is a full-time position reporting to the Executive Director but receives mentoring and support from the Senior Pastor.
Job Duties and Responsibilities
1.Lead the community pastor team and small group leaders as they shepherd our small group communities. Provide encouragement, vision, and accountability to the community pastors.
2.Lead the community pastor team as they develop appropriate curriculum options for our small groups, including sermon based small groups.
3.Oversee the small group support team as they lead and refine our training, promotion, recruiting processes and other administrative processes for small group. The training would include topics on purpose, vision, small group dynamics, spiritual issues, community involvement and other necessary topics.
4.Develop processes to coordinate shepherding needs identified by the community pastor that warrant the involvement of our Congregation Care/Support ministry.
5.Coordinate community outreach with the Pastor of Outreach Ministries.
6.Preach in worship services as requested.
7.Serve as a member of the Ministry Management Team, speaking into church wide strategic decisions.
8.Continue to grow spiritually and professionally by participating in outside opportunities to include conferences, seminars, books, and networking.
Personal Character: Should have a genuine love for the Lord and other people that is exhibited through an authentic, transparent and Christ-centered lifestyle. Must be committed to growing in the spiritual disciplines and sharing his faith with others. Must meet the New Testament expectations for the office of elder (Acts 14:23; I Tim 3:1-7, 5:17; Titus 1:4-9; I Peter 5:1-11)
Doctrine: The Pastor must be in full agreement with the EFCA’s Statement of Faith and be willing to work towards licensure or ordination.
Education: Graduate ministry degree or equivalent.
Experience: Must have experience in leading small communities and their leadership teams with emphasis on formation and maintaining small groups.
In addition, proven skills and success in the following areas:
•Demonstrated skills in leading a systematic adult ministry of disciple making.
•Leader who thrives in a collaborative, team environment.
•Strategic thinker with strong operational and execution skills.
•Recruiting, leading and equipping volunteers and staff.
•Knowledge of and experience in facilitating small group ministries.
Spiritual Gifts: Desired gifts include: Leadership, Administration , Teaching, and Shepherding. Secondary gifts could include Wisdom and Exhortation.
Skills and Abilities: Must be a team player that is passionate about discipling believers and equipping volunteers and our congregation to lead and participate in that ministry.
In addition, the candidate should possess several of the following skills and abilities:
•Effective communicator with strong interpersonal skills to relate to volunteer leaders and the congregation.
•Self-starter who can manage time and multi-task.
•Solid teaching skills with good lesson preparation.
•Ability to lead and manage volunteer leaders to reach ministry goals.
•Able to craft solutions to accomplish complex strategies.
