Job Description:
The Children/Family Minister oversees, coordinates, and casts vision for a comprehensive ministry to children from birth through the 4th /5th grade. The Children/Family Minister provides the leadership necessary for the children’s ministry program to effectively partner with families in guiding children to know, love, serve, share, and worship God through a lifelong relationship with Jesus Christ.


Love Expression: Make the expression of love intentional, and real, to children and families as it undergirds the success of ministerial gifts.
Relationship Development: Make God-centered, Christ-focused, relationship development a priority in this ministry, as well to the church family at large.
Family Equipping: Empower, train, and equip parents to lead their children to the love of God and to a personal relationship with Christ Jesus.
Ministry Integration: Insure a cohesive and healthy ministry through partnership with the Middle School Ministry, the Student Ministry, the Shepherds, the Woodmont Hills Ministry staff, and other congregation members.
Discipleship Coordination: Create environments and provide resources that foster community and that nurture the faith-journey of children and families.
Programming and Event Coordination: Work with staff, families, and volunteers to provide programming, events, and resources for the purpose of encouragement and spiritual growth for children and their families.


The Children/Family Minister reports to the Ministry Oversight Committee, and the Shepherds.


Know the children’s names, and strive to know their parents names, developing a personal ministry connection with each family.
Assist parents in creating a healthy and effective spiritual environment in the home.
Provide encouragement and opportunities for training/growth to parents and volunteers including safety planning and training.
Communicate the vision of the Children/Family Ministry to all ministry leadership, volunteers, students, and the church body.
Recruit energized and gifted volunteers.
Develop Volunteer Teams and Coaches (Ministry Leaders) for each age division.
Coordinate meetings with Teams, Coaches, and volunteers.
Be intentional in fostering healthy, productive relationships and experiences between the Children/Family Ministry, and the church as a whole, including worship.
Supervise various related ministries and activities: Camp Sonrise, Zoner Day Camp, the Mark Burress Children’s Library and F.I.N. (Families in Need: Ministry to children with special needs), Camp Sonrise, Zoner Day Camp, and others as directed.
Inform the parents, shepherds, staff and congregation on a regular basis regarding the “pulse”, successes, and needs of the Children/Family Ministry.
Manage the budget planning and expenses of the Children/Family ministry, keeping within
the budget approved by the shepherds.
Organize, develop, and evaluate specific ministry opportunities to accomplish the ministry
Assess and develop age-appropriate curriculum for each age group, providing children and their families a solid foundation of Bible knowledge and character development.
Monitor the effectiveness and impact of children’s ministry volunteers.
Partner with the Middle School and Student/Family Ministry to develop and maintain consistency and excellence in community building, and to create synergy across programs.
Serve as a vital and contributing member of the church Ministry Staff Team.
Participate in the ministry oversight process, actively engaging the Children/Family ministry
support team organized by the Ministry Oversight Committee (MOC) of the Shepherds.
Attend professional development conferences and seminars.
Anticipate, and project future facility and resource needs, budgeting accordingly.
Oversee and support all Sunday and Wednesday programming and other ministry sponsored events.
Other duties as assigned.

Team building skills – The ability to coordinate teams with vision, enthusiasm and wisdom.
Administration – Organizational and time management skills that allow one to juggle the details of ministry while keeping the big picture in mind.
Effectiveness – The capability of casting vision and remaining committed to reaching goals.
Flexibility – The ability to think creatively in an ever-changing ministry environment; the ability to take direction and feedback well; a great desire to learn.
Experience – A minimum of three years experience leading a large children’s ministry within a church context, is desired.
Education – A Bachelor’s degree in Youth and Family Ministry, Marriage and Family Ministry, or Child Development and Education is preferred, but not required. Experience will be heavily considered.
