Evangelical Covenant Church of Alaska
Job Description:
Missionary/Pastor Openings in Bush Alaska
December, 16, 2010

We presently have a pastor/missionary vacancy in one of our churches located in Western Bush Alaska. This means it is a very remote and isolated village off the road-system. The only way in or out is by plane [except by boat in the summer or snowmobile in the winter]. Serving at a church in Western Alaska could be likened to serving in a foreign country because it consists of a ministry environment of predominately a Native Eskimo population and culture. However, most of the Native Eskimos are bilingual, English is the primary language spoken and the need to learn their language is not necessary. Most of the Native people still live a subsistence lifestyle where they depend heavily on hunting, fishing and berry picking as the main source of putting food on the table. In order for a person to win the trust of the people, it is important to take on, in part, the lifestyle of the culture.

Life in Bush Alaska is not easy nor is ministry. There are long cold winters and long periods of darkness. Of course the opposite is true in the summer when the sun barely sets and the sun shines at midnight. Like the lower 48 Native people, there is a high incidence of abuse of many kinds: alcohol, drugs, suicide, sexual, etc.

Most of the small Western Alaskan churches struggle to make ends meet because of economics. There are few jobs available in the villages with an unemployment rate around 85%. Therefore, to provide an adequate income, financial support must be raised by the pastor/missionary. The one way to eliminate the need to raise as much support is for the pastor’s spouse to work as a teacher within the local village school. On occasion, a nursing position may also be available.

If you are still interested and sense the Holy Spirit may be nudging you to become a part of the Covenant team God has raised up in Alaska, praise God! Please email (1) your resume, (2) a 1-2 page doctrinal position paper, (3) a 1-2 page testimony of your faith and call, (4) references and (5) a digital sermon to: iditarodney@gci.net. Otherwise, please mail to the address below.

If you are unfamiliar with the Evangelical Covenant Church, you can check out the denomination's Web sight at www.covchurch.org. That should give you a little more information concerning who we are as a whole. Following are a few excerpts from its web pages...

The Evangelical Covenant Church

Consistent with its affirmation of classical Christianity and its own historical experience, the Evangelical Covenant Church affirms as central to its life and thought a number of evangelical emphases. Foremost among these are the following:
1. The centrality of the Word of God.
2. The necessity of the new birth.
3. The church as a fellowship of believers.
4. A conscious dependence on the Holy Spirit.
5. The reality of freedom in Christ.

Who We Are
The Evangelical Covenant Church is a denomination of more than seven hundred churches in the United States and Canada. The church outside the U.S. is even larger, due to our sensitivity to reach the “uttermost parts of the world.” It was founded by Swedish immigrants in 1885 as a voluntary covenant of churches committed to working together to share the Good News of Jesus Christ. Covenant churches emphasize the Bible's witness to new life in Jesus Christ expressed in a day to day walk with the Lord.

What is a Covenant Church?
• Evangelical, but not exclusive
• Biblical, but not doctrinaire
• Traditional, but not rigid
• Congregational, but not independent

The Covenant Mission
We are united by Christ in a holy covenant of churches empowered by the Holy Spirit to obey the Great Commandments and the Great Commission:
• ...to love God with all our heart, soul, strength and mind;
• ...to love our neighbor as ourselves, and
• ...to go into all the world and make disciples.
