JOB DESCRIPTION
ASSISTANT PASTOR, CHILDREN/YOUTH

Job Summary:

The Assistant Pastor will communicate God’s love, Christ’s teaching and the passion of the Holy Spirit in a creative and visionary way to lead and support the people of RMCUMC in their Christian walk. The Assistant Pastor will draw upon proven spiritual leadership, communication, and discipleship skills in caring and discerning manner to support the Senior Pastor in carrying out mission and vision of Ridge Manor Community United Methodist Church (RMCUMC). In addition, the Assistant Pastor will lead the Children’s and Youth Ministries by nurturing the development of children and teens in the Body of Christ, drawing volunteers into this growing, vital ministry developing their spiritual gifts and callings.

Essential Functions:

Pastoral Responsibilities: With a Spirit filled love of God and sense of service to His people support the furtherance of God’s work in Ridge Manor by…
• Prayerfully discerning God’s vision for you within RMCUMC.
• Actively participating in planning worship services, including sermon series development, selecting music, preparing audio-visual and other materials and coordinating with lay leaders and volunteers.
• Assisting the Senior Pastor in the development and delivery of a second healing service, in addition to a traditional Sunday service.
• Serving as liaison between the Church and external praise and worship teams, including representatives of other ministries, who may be invited to participate in worship services at RMCUMC.
• Leading worship services and delivering sermon messages as back-up to the Senior Pastor.
• Supporting the full range of RMCUMC ministries such as outreach, food pantry and missions.
• Providing Christian, Spirit filled counseling to RMCUMC members and others in the Ridge Manor community seeking guidance with personal and family issues. Prayerfully considering the needs of the individual and helping them obtain additional resources as necessary.
• Assuming primary responsibility for Conference and Regional reporting.

Children’s and Youth Ministries Program Responsibilities: By God’s grace and through prayerful discernment of His will, the Children’s and Youth Director will…
• Prayerfully gain God’s vision for our Children’s and Youth Ministry along with the other leaders and then cast and recast that vision regularly.
• Create an environment where our children and youth are free to become life-long worshippers and followers of Jesus Christ.
• Display an energetic and joyful spirit regarding your faith and the Children’s and Youth Ministries.
• Foster an atmosphere where the Word of God is central to our curriculum and overall education of our kids.
• Deliver messages that combine strong Biblical roots and real-life challenges.
• Offer general oversight to the main Children’s and Youth ministries of our church—Kid’s café, Sunday Children’s Church, UC4JC, Youth Night, VBS and seasonal events.
• Model prayer and value prayer by including it within the ministries for children and families.
• Embrace a holistic approach to developing the spiritual lives of children and youth by using the arts, visual aids, technology and the whole of creative experiences available today.
• Discern the spiritual benchmarks that children should be going through on their way to being a mature Christian youth and adult.
• Teach confirmation classes and assist the Senior Pastor with Youth baptisms or reaffirmations.
• Present opportunities for Youth spiritual growth and development through annual programs such as Acquire the Fire and summer camp, including support of the Youth in their own fundraising efforts.

• Takes care of their own personal, spiritual life by attending worship, retreats, continuing education trainings/seminars, Bible studies and/or a small group.
• Is a positive, approachable person, quick to listen, slow to speak or become angry or defensive.
• Recruits, trains, inspires and equips others leaders to work within the ministries of RMCUMC.
• Communicates clearly with volunteers, parents, staff and the overall congregation.
• Fosters a team spirit amongst the volunteers and staff.
• Works with excellence, seeking to lead by example and put forth your best effort in all you do.
• Assesses and provides feedback to/from volunteers and other Church leadership regarding Ministry events and activities.
• Maintains adequate and appropriate curriculum supplies and materials, ensuring timely ordering.
• Handles calls, e-mail and correspondences in a timely manner.
• Maintains accurate records, including volunteer background checks in a secure filing system.
• Observes and carries out the Conference mandate of Safe Sanctuary—at least two adults per class of children, one must be background checked and both over 18.
• Attends staff meetings and works with other staff members and Church leaders to execute the overall mission and vision of our Church in a unified manner.
• Formulates and maintains the annual Children’s and Youth Ministries budget.
• Networks with other Children’s and Youth Directors in our area.


Accountabilities:

The Assistant Pastor reports to the Senior Pastor in day-to-day operations. Annual self-assessments and reviews will be conducted by the Staff Parish Relationship Committee, or their designees, with input from the Senior Pastor. In addition, the programs will be monitored and reviewed by the Executive Committee of RMCUMC to ensure consistency with the overall strategy and goals of the Church.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities Required:

Education/Experience:
• Bachelor degree or equivalent preferred
• Some seminary or biblical studies
• Training in personal counseling
• 5 or more years relevant experience

Communication and Other Skills:
• Strong oral communication skills
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills suitable for developing and leading children of all ages
• Interpersonal skills required to work well with others
• Knowledge of email systems and internet usage
• Computer skills including Word and PowerPoint

Hours and Availability:
• Position is full time
• Work schedule includes Sunday morning and/or Saturday evening worship service and weekly afternoon or evening programs for both children’s and youths

Other:
• Conduct and carry oneself in a manner befitting a representative of the Lord and His Church at Ridge Manor
• Requirements include background checks
• Ability to work individually and as part of a team
• Ability to remain calm under pressure and resolve conflict in a timely and constructive manner
• Ability to work flexible hours as required by seasonal and other special programs
