Director of Student Ministries
Full-Time Position

Mount Vernon is a United Methodist church situated in a bedroom community to the Dalton and Chattanooga areas. We are strategically located between an elementary school and a middle school. The congregation has a good mixture of young and middle aged members. After a very successful building program, we are now in the process of building the infrastructure to go where God is leading us, meet the community need and use our available resources. We currently have a small traditional youth program and an extremely fast-growing Friday night ministry to youth in the community. A large number of our congregation are committed to reaching our youth within this community with their hearts, resources and presence.

Job Title: Director of Student Ministries

Reports to: Senior Pastor

Measurable Criteria:
• Agreement with our church’s vision, goals and statement of faith
• At least a Bachelor's degree (B.A. or B.S.) from four-year college or university (some Bible college or Seminary desired)
• At least three years youth ministry experience in a growing youth ministry
• Experience managing others

Observable Qualifications:
• A strong walk with God through a growing personal relationship with Jesus Christ
• Must have a drive and heart for God in working with teenagers in grades 6-12.
• A gifted leader capable of bringing the church and un-churched youth in our community closer to God by following the examples of Jesus Christ.
• Teachable, with a desire to grow in faith and abilities
• A self starter—highly motivated
• Exhibits a passion for youth ministry
• Understands today’s youth culture
• Strong verbal and written communication skills
• A good role model in worship, study, fellowship, evangelism and missions
• Team player with effective relational skills (works well with others)
• Musically inclined

Job Description:
1. Lead, develop and manage ministry programs
• Be proficient in organizing, communicating with and leading youth and adult volunteers to be ever growing examples of Christ
2. Set the vision for the youth ministry with a plan to carry it out
• Create a Biblical purpose statement for the youth group including at least these three elements: evangelism, spiritual growth (which includes fellowship, worship and Biblical teaching), and student leadership
• Teach the vision and purpose statement to all volunteers, staff, and student leaders
3. Develop and lead programs according to the vision and purpose of the youth ministry
• Create outreach programs, activities and events (evangelism)
• Plan spiritual growth programs, activities and events that include opportunities for kids to worship, fellowship with each other, learn Biblical truths and apply them to their lives (spiritual growth)
• Plan programs, activities or events, developing students who want to reach out and serve others, impacting them with the love of Christ (student leadership)
4. Recruit and train volunteer leaders to help foster the purpose statement
• Every student should know an adult who is praying, caring and investing in his/her life
• Meet regularly with volunteers and staff
• Build team enthusiasm with consistent training and equipping
• Provide annual training events or conferences for team members
5. Build and maintain relationships with kids both churched and un-churched
• Meet regularly with kids from the youth group
• Befriend several unchurched kids with no strings attached
• Seek out opportunities to “hang out” with kids on campus, at sports events, or in the community
• Maintain an “open-door” policy
6. Build and maintain quality relationships with parents
• Clearly share your vision with parents so they understand the purpose of the youth ministry
• Create avenues of consistent contact with parents (regular e-newsletters, annual parent meetings, etc.)
• Become aware of the needs of the parents
7. Network with other youth workers in the community
• Initiate contact with other youth workers to pray for the community
• Meet regularly with other youth workers, encouraging each other, sharing ideas and experiences
• Program or attend area events with other youth ministries annually
8. Set and oversee the youth ministry budget
• Set a budget that reflects the values in your vision and purpose
• Be prudent with finances, sticking with the budget you set
9. Involve students in the ministry of the church as a whole, supporting and participating in the church’s vision, worship services, and activities
10. Attend weekly church staff meeting and Sunday morning ministries
11. Provide a weekly report to the senior pastor of your goals, accomplishments, prayers and praises
12. Other responsibilities and duties to be determined by joint discussion between the Staff Parish Relations Committee and Pastor as the position needs change and arise
