Director of Children's Ministries

CLASSIFICATION: This position is a regular, full-time exempt position within VPC. In keeping with Director level positions at VPC, the incumbent is expected to work 50 hours per week including normal office hours Monday through Friday, Sunday hours as required to support and manage the Children’s Ministries, and some evenings and weekends. The Director is expected to regularly attend VPC worship services and participate in the community life of VPC.

REPORTS TO: Associate Pastor of Equipping Ministries

DIRECT REPORTS: Assistant Director of Children’s Ministries (ADCM), Administrative Assistant, Summer Interns, Childcare Coordinator, Children’s Librarian, Drama Coordinator. (Note: Sunday Morning Nursery Coordinator reports to the Childcare Coordinator.)

MISSION AND VISION OF VPC; OBJECTIVES OF THE POSITION.

The CM Director works with the Executive Director and the Associate Pastor of Equipping Ministries to envision, plan, develop, execute, and supervise the Children's Ministries Program (birth through sixth grade), with the ultimate goal of shaping the spiritual formation of young disciples within our community in adherence with VPC’s Core Beliefs and Mission.

MAJOR TASKS, DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES; ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND MAJOR DUTIES

PROGRAM DIRECTION
• Create and implement learning opportunities that foster personal commitment to Christ and that nurture each child’s Christian faith, in coordination with ADCM.
• Oversee a comprehensive Sunday morning program for children (birth through sixth grade), including 2:52 Basics curriculum for K-4th grade.
• Oversee the planning and execution of spiritual formation opportunities in addition to Sunday school such as Godly Play, Gateways to Worship, summer programs (VBS, Art Camps, Children’s Summer Mission Team), and evening children’s programs.
• Coordinate the children’s sermon in the worship service.
• Implement intergenerational events at special seasons such as Thanksgiving, Advent, Christmas, Lent, and Easter.
• Design and provide opportunities for involvement in age-appropriate missions within and beyond the local church.
• Recruit, equip, encourage, and supervise staff and volunteers to serve in Children’s Ministries, in coordination with the ADCM. Develop, staff, and supervise all weekday and Sunday summer programs for children, in coordination with the ADCM.
• Envision and implement future growth of Children’s Ministries (CM) programs consistent with the needs of the church and the community.
• Research, select or design, and implement Christian education curriculum that meets children’s spiritual needs and reflects a scope and sequence that increases in depth with grade level.
• Gather family input when planning CM programs and curriculum, and seek to incorporate this input as appropriate.
• Develop and provide equipping opportunities for parents of children from birth to 6th grade.

LEADERSHIP AND MANAGEMENT
• As needed, recruit, screen, and train members of Children’s Ministries staff team including Assistant DCM, Childcare Coordinator, Administrative Assistant, Children’s Librarian, and Sunday Morning Nursery Coordinator.
• Supervise the recruitment, screening, and training of all CM volunteers.
• Oversee, administer, and update as needed the Child Protection Policy and Emergency Preparedness Program.
• Chair monthly Childcare Advisory Team.
• Prepare annual Children's Ministry budget and manage yearly spending.
• Maintain currency in the field of Children's Ministries by participating in select CM conferences, workshops, and other relevant continuing education opportunities.
• Recruit, supervise, mentor, and train the Children's Ministries Summer Interns in coordination with ADCM.
• Recruit, supervise, and train the “Drama Coordinator” in coordination with the ADCM.

INTERNAL COORDINATION
• Work with Director of Student Ministries and Adult Ministries in equipping parents.
• Serve as liaison and consultant to the Preschool Director.
• Attend VPC director and staff meetings as requested.
• Work with the coordinator of the children’s choirs.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES, AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS NECESSARY TO PERFORM THE JOB; REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE FOR THE POSITION.

• Desire to share the Good News of Jesus Christ with children.
• Enthusiastically affirm and be guided by the values, vision, and mission of VPC.
• Love for children and deep commitment to their Christian development.
• A committed Christian who is able and eager to openly articulate faith in Jesus Christ as his/her Lord and Savior.
• Bachelor’s degree required.
• Degree/graduate studies in Christian education preferred.
• Knowledge of the stages of child and faith development.
• Leadership experience (volunteer or paid) in Children's Ministries required.
• Demonstrated ability to recruit, train, and motivate staff and volunteers.
• Demonstrated ability to invigorate children’s Christian education using contemporary media (music, drama, multi-media).
• Collaborative, mature, experienced leader who inspires confidence and trust among multiple constituencies, including families, staff and volunteers.
• Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
• Demonstrated ability to focus on goals, strategies and tactics to improve Children’s Ministries.
• Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
• Computer skills including email, ACS, Excel, Power Point, Constant Contact, and simple website updates.

WORKING CONDITIONS

The working conditions are those of a normal office environment and the physical demands are those necessary to successfully perform the major tasks, duties, responsibilities, and essential functions of the position as outlined in the previous paragraphs.
