DIRECTOR OF WORSHIP ARTS

PURPOSE:

The Director of Worship Arts provides leadership of Central Presbyterian Church’s worship ministry, directly overseeing of all aspects of contemporary worship, and coordinating information and resources with traditional worship.

ACCOUNTABILITY:

The Director of Worship Arts is directly accountable to the Senior Pastor for all Contemporary Worship activities and effective support of Traditional Worship activities.

ELIGIBILITIES:

Sincere Faith / Christ Centered Life: The Director of Worship Arts shall be a Christian, who has a living walk with Christ, and exercises faith and service through this ministry position. Other attributes include: an ability to integrate and translate the congregation’s biblical mission and purpose through the ministry of Contemporary Worship; applies spiritual giftedness; knowledge of the Word of God; and the ability to lead in the musical aspects of worship. Respects varied worship styles.

Professional Education and Experience:
The Director of Worship Arts shall have five years in professional Contemporary Worship leadership in a large church setting (or equivalent experience). He or she shall be a college graduate; graduate and/or professional continuing education in worship and music ministry is preferred. This person demonstrates a keen sense of biblical awareness. A demonstrated knowledge of the liturgical year and the Presbyterian/reformed worship tradition is preferred.

Technical Skills
The Director of Worship Arts has the ability to generate innovative forms of worship for a multi-cultural and multi-generational congregation. He or she is required to possess proven experience of integrating music, drama, computer, video, sound, and lighting system technologies in the Contemporary Worship experience. The ability to play guitar and/or keyboard and vocal singing are preferred.

Organizational Skills
The Director of Worship Arts shall have an ability to envision and develop worship objectives into manageable, tangible, and achievable goals. He or she shall identify, train, and motivate volunteers for Contemporary Worship Ministries. He or she shall have administrative oversight for development of this ministry including coordination with the pastoral and church staff; participation in regularly scheduled meetings with the Senior Pastor; and participation in supervision or mentoring by Senior Pastor. He or she shall participate in the process of planning communication with the church through the use of bulletin, newsletter, website, and other channels; prepare an annual report; and prepare occasional reports on Contemporary Worship. Oversee financial accounting and use of funds.

Interpersonal Skills:
The Director of Worship Arts must have strong interpersonal communication skills. He or she needs an ability to relate well with people and to make decisions and delegate responsibilities to others. The director will have the responsibility to recruit musicians and other Worship Team members, communicate ministry expectations, and, with the counsel of the Senior Pastor, shape the Worship Team so that ministry effectiveness is assured. The director is required to interact regularly and serve with the pastor(s) and staff.

The Director of Worship Arts needs an attitude of other-centeredness and the ability to graciously express leadership. Has an openness to new ideas; is a self-starter; must be collaborative and team oriented; organized; punctual; pressure tolerant; and dependable in meeting deadlines and goals. Has a high energy level and applies it to the creating a quality Contemporary Worship experience.

Confidentiality: The Director of Worship Arts must exemplify an ability to maintain confidentiality and handle delicate situations with discretion and insight.


RESPONSIBILITIES:

Provides leadership and pastoral oversight for all Contemporary Worship teams and activities including year-to-year vision/strategy, series-to-series imagination and creativity, and week-to-week management and supervision.
Develops a worship arts program in scope and style so as to appeal to urban and suburban students, young adults, and young families in the Baltimore-metro area.
Manages full and part time staff, helping them set appropriate goals, directing their energies in areas of their giftedness, and developing their potential
Oversees and develops all contemporary worship arts teams, directly or through staff and volunteer leaders: Mosaic band, technical arts team, drama team, creative team (brainstorming), hospitality team (ushers), graphics team, and CentralPCProductions team (original video creation); develops new teams as needed or desired.
Identifies, recruits, trains, and develops volunteers in every aspect of the ministry, elevating capable volunteers to appropriate leadership roles.
Guides the spiritual growth and leadership development of staff and volunteer in critical leadership roles within the ministry
Oversees the entire Contemporary Worship planning process with the Worship Staff by gathering information on service themes from pastors 6-8 weeks in advance, brainstorming ideas with the creative team, designing each Sunday’s service around those ideas, implementing those ideas with the help of worship arts volunteers and staff, and ensuring proper execution of the service plan.
Directs the Mosaic band, guiding the spiritual growth and leadership development of worship leaders, fostering a sense of community among worship team members, overseeing the selection of all music choices for Contemporary Worship, communicating song information to scheduled team members, and participating in rehearsals as leader, instrumentalist, or director.
Maintains a high standard of excellence in all aspects of worship ministry, particularly performance arts such as music, drama, and preaching; as well as multi-media arts such as graphic design and video
Coordinates and resources the Traditional Worship Team as needed with sermon information, creative ideas, administrative help, and technical support; participates in quarterly Worship Coordination Team meetings with pastors, head usher, traditional team members to coordinate all-church worship concerns
