The Director of Celestial Choir (DCC) gives direction, oversight, coordination and
unity to the music ministry of Celestial Choir so that the worship of the congregation is
enhanced to the glory of God. This ministry ultimately helps the church fulfill its Godgiven
vision to help people worship God and grow in their relationship with Christ and
with each other.
The Director of Celestial Choir shall build on Bright Hope’s longstanding music
tradition of excellence and implement a music ministry that is God-honoring, broad,
exciting, and inspirational. Church and/or professional references will be required.
The Director of Celestial Choir should have a demonstrated and proven track record of
effective choral directorship. A college degree is required. Additional study and/or
experience in the areas of worship, music, and arts ministry will be helpful. Must pass
required criminal, financial and sexual misconduct background checks.

The Director of Celestial Choir should:
• Demonstrate a mature Christian faith and commitment to being a disciple of
• Be a worshiper of God who is enthusiastic and a self-starter, encourager,
visionary who enjoys entering into, building and maintaining collegial
relationships with people.
• Have a calling to music ministry and an understanding that the position of
Director of Celestial Choir is one of servanthood.
• Have knowledge of the African American worship tradition and a theological
understanding of the church sufficient to appropriately select music and texts for
• Be musically trained and understand the range of musical genres reflective of the
African-American tradition, including anthems, classical, “Negro spirituals,”
traditional hymns, Black gospel, and contemporary gospel and Christian music
(i.e., “praise and worship”), among others.
• Demonstrate proficiency on piano, Hammond organ and pipe organ (at least a
Rogers Oxford 750).
• Be proficient in playing music-by-ear and ability to read music, especially
complex arrangements; proficiency in playing piano, organ and/or keyboard; and
comfortable being musical accompanist with choirs, etc.

Other qualities desired in an ideal candidate are:
1. Discipleship – must be a Christ-centered individual with a passion for
excellence in music, knowledge of God’s word and a dedication to ministry and
2. Leadership ability—able to work collegially with musicians, artists and other
leaders, and pastorally with a diverse congregation.
3. Theologically grounded—able to articulate a theology of worship that
demonstrates a solid grasp of historic and biblical principles and contemporary
issues in Christian worship.

The Director of the Celestial Choir’s primary responsibility to lead the Celestial Choir
music ministry and to direct the Choir in providing praise to God that is of the highest
quality and reflective of the range of genres present in the African-American worship
experience. In addition, The Director will be responsible for the following:
1. Resourcing all worship services at the church.
2. Providing vision for Celestial Choir Ministry to help support and complement the
vision of the pastor.
3. Assisting the pastor with planning Sunday morning services.
4. Coordinating with the pastor and music staff to provide meaningful music that is
timely and appropriate for each context.
5. Leading and/or coordinating praise component of worship services and
rehearsals of choirs/singing groups and instrumentalists. Planning, arranging
and providing/conducting music for seasonal presentations, church
programs/activities, weddings and funerals requiring music are key duties.
6. Choosing, procuring and selecting “new” and appropriate music and fine arts that
will strengthen the experience for each worship or program context.
7. Rehearsing the Choir at least weekly and sufficiently to maintain a high quality of
music repertoire.
8. Planning Annual Celestial Choir Christmas Concert and other musical programs
as needed.
9. Seeking to develop ways to reach people outside our congregation through
existing or new music ministries.
10. Managing equipment, instruments and music for music ministry including
copyrights and library.
11. Preparing annual budget with Celestial Choir leaders based upon church policies
and practices.
12. Listening effectively and communicating clearly, both orally and in written form.
13. Passing criminal, financial and sexual misconduct background checks.
14. Other responsibilities as agreed upon under the direction of the Senior Pastor.

• The Director of Celestial Choir is directly accountable to the Senior Pastor.

This position will be compensated with a salary commensurate with experience,
education and the salaries for similar positions in other similarly situated churches in
our area, as determined by the Senior Pastor.
