Job Description:
A great Children's Pastor is hard to find! Here's what we have noticed, a lot of individuals who desire to be a children's pastor fall into a few different categories...

The "All I want to do is hang out with kids" person
This individual loves to have fun, but lacks the ability and desire to lead a massive team of committed volunteers (100+). They struggle to set goals, evaluate problems, recruit and train volunteers, and cast vision for their leaders, staff, and church families. They want to create a fun place for kids on Sunday, but are unwilling to do the hard work of partnering with parents and training them to become the primary spiritual influence in their child's life. We want to hire fun staff members, but we also need our Children’s Pastor to enjoy being a strong leader to adults.

The "I love making videos" person
This individual really wants to be on the team that produces Blue's Clues or Sponge Bob, but has decided that being a Children's Pastor is a great way to spend countless hours a week making videos for kids. They often lack the interpersonal skills to build relationships with hundreds of leaders and families and would rather make a fun video than develop a dynamic team of small group leaders to invest in children and families on a relational level. We love to have creative people on our staff team, but we never want to value creativity above relationships in our children’s ministry.

The "If we provide enough programs spiritual growth will happen" person
This individual believes that the perfect children's ministry consists of a minimum of 9 programs being run throughout the week. These include (but aren't limited to) Sunday morning discipleship, Sunday morning large group, Sunday afternoon service projects, Sunday night bible quiz team, Monday night children's choir, Wednesday night Awana...I think you see where I'm going with this one. They would rather do many things on an average level than do a few things very well. They would also rather spend their time managing programs than developing strategies to help parents teach their children the truths of the Bible. We understand that the church plays a critical role in the spiritual development of children, but we believe it’s better to provide resources to help parents to be the primary spiritual influence in their child’s life, instead of multiple church-run programs.

We are a church that is focused on creating a church that unchurched people love to attend. In the past year we have seen 800+ new people begin attending. Most of these are families that are "dechurched" (had some type of interaction with church as a kid, but stopped attending because of irrelevance, legalism, hypocrisy, etc.). We are expecting this trend to continue as more of our families are reaching out to their neighbors, family members, coworkers and friends who are far from God and inviting them to our weekend services. Once here, we are committed to plugging them into a small group environment where they can begin to grow in their relationship with Christ.

We are looking for a strong leader who is committed to the same core values that we hold in our Children's Ministry...
Partnering with parents (we are structured around the Orange philosophy of Reggie Joiner)
Relational discipleship (committed small group leaders who are consistent in a child's life)
Teaching Biblical truth in a fun and relevant way
Merging with the overall church (we aren't interested in created ministry silos)
Excellence honors God and inspires people (you must be committed to excellence)

Does this description resonate with you? Are you interested in joining a staff team that is willing to do whatever it takes to reach families who are far from God, see them accept Christ, and then grow in their love for Him? Does it excite you to be in a church that is expanding at a rate that creates many growing pains? (facility, budget, staff needs, etc.)

If this is you we would love to open a conversation with you. Please e-mail your resume to tfarrant@egreenwood.org.
