Position - Chaplain
Details of Position - The Chaplain is the principal pastoral care provider for the seafarer visitors and their families and an advocate for the mission and values of Seafarers’ House. The Chaplain provides counseling, advocacy, and religious services to seafarers and their families around the world. This position reports directly to the Executive Director.
Job Duties - 1. Establish reliable, effective multi-faith ministry that addresses the needs of mariners. 2. Develop a pastoral care lay ministry program including recruitment, orientation, education and training to supplement and extend the work of the chaplain. 3. Position the chaplaincy as an effective liaison and community educator for Seafarers’ House in multi-faith communities and particularly those which hold the greatest potential for effective partnerships in serving our mission. 4. Actively participate as a member of the Seafarers’ House team. Other requirements: • Rotate call to respond to emergency situations. • Be present at the Seafarers House from 9AM to 3PM Saturdays and Sundays. • Conduct ship visits regularly. • Develop and maintain a Ship Visiting Handbook. • Maintain accurate records of ship visits using the approved Chaplain’s report. • Obtain and distribute religious material. • Facilitates the celebration of the sacraments as appropriate to his or her clerical status.
Minmum Requirements - Minimum Qualifications: • Bachelor’s degree is required. • Chaplain should have completed a curriculum of theological classes and displays skills and competencies in pastoral care. • At least two years experience in ministerial outreach such as pastoring a church, chaplaincy or ministry and/or equivalent advocacy experience • Ability and stamina to stand for long periods of time; able to negotiate ladders and gangways of boarding and disembarking ships • Ability and desire to work with clergy and volunteers of varying faith backgrounds. • Computer literacy • Eligible for Transport Worker Identification Credential (TWIC)
Preferred Qualifications - • Certification by an appropriate clinical pastoral agency • Multi-lingual. • International and multi-cultural experience. • Prior experience within maritime community • Knowledge of Port operations. • Knowledge of worldwide tradition of maritime ministry • Knowledge of cruise and cargo operations.
Salary - Commensurate with experience
