Job Description for Director of Discipleship for Children, Youth and Families:
Reminds the congregation continually to seek God and the Kingdom of God first – as instructed
in Deuteronomy 6:4-9:

Bind them as a sign on your hand, fix them as an emblem on your forehead and write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates…
…within the context of:
? Staff liaison to Spiritual Formation Ministry (SFM)(charged with “equipping the congregation to be disciples of Jesus, by teaching the Bible and spiritual practices and by creating opportunities to experience them”)
Will help nurture relationships with children, youth, and families
With SFM team help and in consultation with Pastoral staff, will evaluate curriculum for adult spiritual formation.
? Equip and support leaders in adult spiritual formation classes and groups
? Research and share recently published adult curriculum and approaches.
With SFM team help, will develop, implement, review, and revise curriculum for Sunday School (pre-K through 8th grade) and provide oversight for this ministry
? will create/lead education and equipping opportunities for teachers, including safety awareness education opportunities/background checks
? will choose and/or create curriculum (utilizing curriculum teams) for the spiritual formation of children and youth. This includes school year and summer programs including VBS
? Work with teams on changes, issues, and conflict resolution within the program
? Work with teams to prepare calendar for the program year in advance
With SFM team help, will develop, review, revise curriculum for Confirmation and provide oversight for this Ministry in consultation with the Senior Pastor. Oversee and support continuity of spiritual formation process from beginnings of Sunday school through Confirmation
? will engage bible study, pray with and be available as a resource for Confirmation Teachers and Mentors
? will choose and/or create curriculum (utilizing curriculum teams) for the spiritual formation of confirmands
? will serve as lead of the Confirmation teaching team with involvement of the Senior Pastor.
? Staff liaison to Abundant Life Ministry (charged to “educate, invite and equip the congregation to form a strong Christian Community”)
? Educate and communicate church membership as discipleship.
? Help coordinate opportunities/activities for adults, families and/or youth that encourage seeking God first and experiencing God’s Abundance (this would be done in conjunction with other ministries, e.g. Spiritual Formation Ministry or Mission and Outreach Ministry).
? Support and participate in the evaluation of our ministry of “New Member Welcome”
? Support ALM in helping congregation members receive and share in God’s abundance through the annual covenanting process
? Help provide opportunities for the congregation to hear the witness of members from the church and from the wider community (i.e. Abundant Life Moment, Heads Up Hartford and the Lenten series).
o Will assist Senior Pastor and Church Leadership share and remind the congregation of the Good News with varying speaking responsibilities in
the form of:
? Children’s Time (lead once a month, recruit other leaders)
? Family Christmas Eve worship service, other youth/children-oriented worship
Qualifications: B.A. with Education emphasis. Hands-on training is a plus with theological/Christian focus, and experience working with children, youth, and families. Biblical knowledge and regular practice of spiritual disciplines required.
Reporting: Hired and dismissed by HR Ministry, reporting relationship with Senior Pastor, meets with SF and AL Ministries.
Time commitment: 20 hours
