The First United Methodist Church of Goshen Indiana is seeking full-time music pastor who will work with the congregation’s vision statement, “Take Jesus Christ to people, so that they may be transformed into faithful followers, all to the glory of God.” The function of the music pastor is to shepherd and supervise all music ministries. Candidates for this position must have a personal relationship with God through Jesus Christ, have Biblical training in music ministries, possess leadership and people development skills, possess musical giftedness and a passion for worship, and are willing to make a long-term commitment.
Our church has two sites, two services, and Sunday morning attendance of 500. Our music ministry includes traditional, blended, and contemporary worship styles. The music minister assists the pastors to plan and develop worship services; develops all areas of music within the church ministries; assists during worship services by leading worship as guided and by the pastors; assists and coordinates with the technical staff; produces the Living Word Ministry; and assists the Drama Team Ministries where appropriate. The music minister has a passion for music, is able to lead individuals on the music ministry teams to a closer relationship with Jesus Christ, maintain a Godly character, be in agreement with the United Methodist Church statement of beliefs, be comfortable in leading large and small groups, and be able to work well with others.
I. Qualifications and Personal Intentions:
A. Have a personal relationship with God through Jesus Christ and have taken the step of believer’s baptism
B. Make our church purpose statement “To take Jesus Christ to people so that they might be transformed into faithful followers, all to the Glory of God,” a personal statement.
C. Be in agreement with United Methodist Church statement of beliefs.
D. Maintain a godly character and meet the qualifications as set forth in 1 Timothy 3:1-7 and Titus 1:5-9.
E. Possess musical giftedness and a passion for worship.
F. Possess leadership and people development skills.
G. Have a servant’s heart, sense of humor, and a positive attitude.
H. Have Master’s Degree or equivalent experience in Christian music ministry-including traditional, blended and contemporary worship styles.
I. Be a “team player” with church leadership.
J. Strive to support other church ministries.
II. Responsibilities and Duties:
A. Personal Life
1. Growing Relationship with God
a. Have a personal worship time every day.
b. Continue education via challenging books, conferences and classes.
c. Develop accountability with those who will “sharpen your walk.”
2. Family nurturing (if married)
a. Maintain a healthy relationship with spouse and children that is pleasing to God and sets a good example for others.
b. Schedule calendar in advance to meet balanced needs of family and church life.
B. Ministry Area Responsibilities
1. Over-all responsibility to develop all areas of music within the church ministries such that these ministries effectively fulfill the goals and vision of the church.
a. Recruit, train, mentor, and develop musicians, singers, worship leaders for all choirs, praise teams, instrumentalists, bell choirs, etc.
b. Direct or provide directors for each of these groups and others (i.e. children’s choir, youth choirs, Silver Chords, Amen Quartet, Downtown Choir, Praise Teams (both sites), Brass, Ladies Trio, Handbells, Organists, Praise Band, Orchestra, Soloists, Special Music, and The Living Word Presentation)
c. Directly conduct and rehearse those groups that are under the personal direction of the music minister and supervise those volunteer leaders who are leading other music areas.
d. Select and develop music materials, music selection, and other items that create an on-going music library for use; ordering such material with the proper administrative steps.
2. Assist the pastor(s) to plan and develop weekly worship services, including long range planning and development.
3. Assist during worship services by leading worship as guided and approved by the pastor(s).
4. Assist and coordinate with technical staff.
5. Produce, develop, and direct The Living Word Ministry.
6. Assist the Drama Team Ministries where appropriate as staff member and Music Director.
7. Care for all musical instruments of the church; including supervising tuning and maintenance needs of these instruments.
8. Develop and present annual budget to the pastor(s) and church leadership and administer appropriately.
A. Senior Pastor(s): Regular meetings and mentoring will take place for evaluation, direction, support and challenge.
B. Staff Parish: Evaluations will be based on the above job description and suggestions will be given for continuing education and growth.
C. Church: Give reports at Council on Ministries meetings and be prepared to give quarterly and annual reports regarding the entire music ministry.
D. Education: Pursue ongoing personal development through educational opportunities.
