The Student Ministries Pastor will serve as part of the pastoral staff of New Life, meaning he will shepherd families and have a caring heart for the whole body. His primary responsibility will be overseeing the entire youth department (junior and senior high). He is to cast the vision for these ministries in conjunction with the Senior Pastor and the Elders. His responsibilities will include discipleship, teaching, relationships, worship, staff oversight / development, and creative outreach. His relationship to youth is to be as a partner with their parents. He is answerable to the Senior Pastor.
In regards to leadership, vision for ministry, doctrine, and teaching, he will serve directly under the Senior Pastor. In regards to administrative details, he will work under the Associate Pastor of Worship and Administration.
This position is a new one, to build our already growing student ministry. We see this person being highly relational, a dynamic communicator, passionate about Jesus Christ, committed to His Word, and gifted at reaching out to and loving students.
Who We Are
New Life Bible Fellowship is a changing, growing, medium sized church (adult attendance around 375 and about 40 youth in junior and senior high), in Tucson, Arizona. We are elder led and non-denominational, with roots in the Conservative Baptist movement. Our music is contemporary, our dress is casual, and our doctrine is reformed. The church began in 1956, had its heyday in the 70’s, and was somewhat stagnant by the 90’s. Our Senior Pastor (Greg Lavine) came in 1998 and God has been reviving and rebuilding us for His Kingdom. We sold our property in 2007, moved into a school, and are planning on growth as we move into a new facility around March of 2010. As we grow, we have a vision for planting satellite churches.
Regarding staff, we are committed to long-term ministry. We value relationships and cultivate an atmosphere of trust and openness. We appreciate that every member of our body is gifted and called to serve.
The Student Ministries Pastor will be a part of the pastoral staff of the church. As such his gifts, abilities, and thoughts will be valued in the oversight and vision for the whole church. He will be included in the process of dreaming and setting the vision for the church, and will have a heart to shepherd the whole body even though he will primarily work with youth and their families.
He, in concert with the Senior Pastor, will cast the vision for the student ministries of the church. He will empower the students, their families, and the church to respond to that vision. He should be able to inspire, involve, encourage and equip other leaders within student ministries.
He will oversee all student services and activities.
He will make himself available to the youth and their families. He will allow his own family, marriage and faith to be an example for the youth to follow. He will seek to meet the youth on their own turf (i.e. their schools, games, activities etc.). In this, he will invest in the lives of the youth to shepherd and disciple them.
Teaching is a priority. We enjoy fun, wild, and crazy activities that engage students; recognizing that the aim and purpose of these is to see students growing in godliness and a sound Biblical worldview. We see mentoring, small group Bible studies, mission trips, zany amusements or other activities all working together to purposefully disciple students.
Worship with Music
He will make worship an emphasis within student ministries. Worship will help non-Christian students experience the presence of God and cause Christian students to grow in the depth of their relationship with Him.
In time, it would be our desire to see youth leading in worship and a more complete youth service.
Occasionally, perhaps annually, the youth will take the entirety of the regular Sunday morning worship service and lead the church in worship.
Occasionally, he may preach in the regular worship services of the church.
Within the scope of student ministry, evangelism and service are priorities. We see students serving in the community and sharing Christ with friends. In this, there needs to be a balance between discipleship and outreach.
Local service, outreach and short-term mission trips (local and foreign) will be a regular part of the student ministries.
1. Strong commitment to Jesus Christ.
2. Evidence of loving Christian leadership in their home.
3. Commitment to the transforming power of God’s Word.
4. Experience developing a strong youth ministry.
5. Experience in equipping volunteer leadership.
6. B.A. and /or MA/MDiv is preferable.
A salary package will be created in the range of $30,000 to $45,000 depending on experience and education. In addition to their salary, the position will include health insurance and a ministry budget.
Application deadline is October 31st, 2009.
