CHURCH AND COMMUNITY INFORMATION
First Baptist Church of Sister Bay was organized in 1877. On September 5, 1881, Charles Wassell accepted the call to become the first pastor of the 20-member congregation. The current membership is 154, with an additional 32 associate members. The average summer attendance is approximately 300 (2 services) and the average winter attendance is about 110 (one service). We have a strong Junior/Senior High Wednesday night program averaging 50+ young people, currently being led by Gary and Cindy Lundquist. Prior to the passing of our pastor, we were beginning the search for a full-time youth pastor, but that search has been tabled for the time being. We also have a solid Adventure Club program on Wednesday night that runs during the school year. The present physical facility was built in 1975, with an education wing being completed in 1993. The church is debt free.
Northern Door County is driven by tourism. It has also become a retirement destination for baby-boomers. Because of this, our congregation leans toward retirement age, and many of our members are “snowbirds”, leaving us in the Fall for warmer climates. Because of this, we have a fundraiser each August that fills the coffers of the “Winter Reserve Fund”, so that when a large segment of our congregation is not here, we are still able to meet our financial obligations.
Sister Bay is a small village of about 900 people located on the shores of the Bay of Green Bay. It is the quintessential old fishing village of days gone by. The main industry is summer tourism; the largest employer is Scandia Village Retirement Home. It is approximately 25 miles north of Sturgeon Bay, a larger community of approximately 10,000, where there is some industry, and more opportunity for year-round employment than in northern Door County. Sister Bay is located about 80 miles north of Green Bay where the closest regional airport to the area is located. The local school is located in Fish Creek and houses all levels from kindergarten through high school. The school has high academic standards and excels in its sports and music programs. Northern Door County has many cultural activities throughout the summer season, including Birch Creek Music Performance Center, Peninsula Music Festival, Peninsula Player Theatre, many camp grounds, numerous golf courses, charter fishing opportunities, Peninsula State Park, miles of hiking trails and endless water activities. It boasts high limestone cliffs and miles of tranquil shore line. It is an idyllic place to live and offers a safer, slower pace of life in which to observe the beauty of God’s handiwork.
