Denominations: United Methodist
Church Size: 101 to 150
Job Type: Full-Time
WordServe United Methodist Church, a six month old church in the western suburbs of Houston, TX, is seeking a full-time director of student ministries. A highly motivated, passionate leader will have the once in a lifetime opportunity to lead the formation of a brand new student ministry.
WordServe is a progressive United Methodist church with a desire to be shaped by God’s Word and to serve God’s world. We long to see people grow as authentic, transformed followers of Christ, and we strive to help establish the kingdom of God on earth. We have a high value on the Bible, missions/service, prayer, worship, transformation, and stewardship.
As director of student ministries, the primary goal will be to develop and implement a ministry to students (6th -12th grades) that makes authentic, transformed disciples of Jesus Christ. The director will be given a high degree of latitude to develop a ministry with no previous agendas or ideas determining what they do. WordServe desires to have a youth ministry that is serious about engaging students from across our community and creating safe spaces for them to explore faith and grow in Christ. The youth ministry at WordServe will be focused on growing authentic, passionate followers of Christ and helping students live out their faith in significant ways. The director will be expected to develop and utilize a team of leaders (in a variety of capacities) to implement student ministry. Recruiting, training, and empowering others for ministry will be crucial in this position.
A candidate for this position will preferably have successful experience in vocational student ministry or significant non-vocational serving experience in successful youth-related (preferably student ministry-related) organizations (e.g., leader in local church student ministry, worked with Christian youth camp, worked in a para-church related ministry). The successful candidate also preferably holds a bachelor’s degree. Spiritual gifts that may be a good fit for this position (but are not required) are leadership, teaching, administration, and shepherding.
The primary focus of this person's job will be youth ministry (see job description), but the director of student ministries will be expected to serve as a team player with other leaders within the church and be committed to the overall mission and development of the church. The successful applicant must be flexible and able to work in an ever changing environment (no permanent offices or meeting space). The future employee must be incredibly motivated, relational, and a self-starter.
WordServe can guarantee this position for one year with a competitive salary, benefits, and relocation costs (i.e., funding is available for the first year). The health and growth of WordServe suggests that funding will continue to be available after the first year. (Since this is a new church, it is safer for us to say that we can guarantee one year should something unforeseen happen.)
Interested candidates should send a cover letter expressing qualifications, a resume, and references to the contact listed on this posting.
