I. MAJOR PURPOSE AND SCOPE:
The Children’s Director provides experiences for children, parents and volunteers to grow as a disciple of Jesus Christ and communicates the Youth and Children’s Ministry vision, “Love God, Love Others and Serve Others”. The Children’s Director will provide leadership, direction, and development to all aspects of the Children’s program (Birth – 5th Grade) at La Jolla Presbyterian Church (LJPC). This includes selecting and developing curriculum, teaching, recruiting and training volunteers. Developing and implementing Sunday morning programs, delivering the children’s sermon (as needed), weekly mid-week programs (X-zone and X-change), and Vacation Bible Fun Week (VBFW). Planning outreach events, trips, camps, and retreats that foster spiritual development for children.
II. POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Lead a dynamic, growing ministry with the intent for children to “Love God, Love Others and Serve Others”.
a. Work with Youth and Children's Pastor to develop ministry goals for the Children’s Ministry and share with the Youth and Children's Committee.
b. Work with the Youth and Children's Pastor to develop personal goals.
c. Work directly with the Associate Pastor of Youth and Children(YC) on vision for the ministry
d. Be led by God’s direction through personal prayer and bible study
e. Plan and implement mid-week programs (for grades 2/3, 4/5) Sunday school (2 services), activities, mission opportunities, trips and other outings for children and their parents.
f. Selecting, developing and implementing curriculum for Sunday morning programs.
g. Oversee and manage an annual VBFW program
h. Present a relevant and clear communication of the gospel, and in all events expand children’s understanding of scripture.
i. Develop, implement and maintain policies and procedures for nursery and elementary school childcare areas
j. Develop, implement and maintain a comprehensive Child Abuse Prevention Policy.
k. Create & oversee small group ministry.
l. Participate as an active worshipper at LJPC
m. Supervise and support the Children’s Library and recruit volunteers as needed.
n. Participate in leading the children’s sermon in front of the congregation, on a rotational basis or as needed.
2. Direct, develop, recruit, disciple and manage volunteer staff
a. Effectively develop volunteer leadership through discipleship and training.
b. Provide service opportunities for volunteers on a regular basis on ministry, small groups, weekly program, trips, VBFW and other areas that volunteers are involved with Children.
3. Create and calendar Children’s ministry programs, trips and camps on a regular basis so parents and children are aware of upcoming events.
a. Create an annual calendar.
b. Develop and oversee a marketing plan for each event on the calendar, including flyers, newsletters, pulpit, courtyard, web and volunteers.
4. Minister to parents
a. Communicate ministry goals, objectives, and program plans to parents on at least a semi-annual basis, via open house.
b. Build trust between parents and LJPC and connect parents to the ministry by providing opportunities to plug in and engage in the ministry.
c. Create a strong network of SunHouse staff to parent, and parent to parent relationships, including active, inactive and nonbelievers.
5. Manage financial resources
a. Work closely with the YC Pastor and YC Committee to establish and manage the budget.
b. Review and maintain budget in accordance with ministry
c. Manage expenditures and outflows
6. Assist YC Pastor and YC Ministry Team
a. Assist the YC Pastor on any other assigned tasks.
b. Be prepared to work as a team with other YC Ministry staff members on other tasks.
III. QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
1. A devoted follower of Jesus Christ.
2. Passion for reaching students and families for Christ by communicating the gospel.
3. Spiritual gifts that are beneficial to a teaching, equipping, managing, and relational ministry.
4. A four year college degree.
5. Experience in developing and monitoring annual budgets
6. Demonstrate organizational skills, including ability to recruit volunteers and delegate.
7. Experience leading a volunteer staff by knowing, loving and celebrating them.
8. Has experience and is comfortable speaking in front of large groups.
