Job Description:
First United Methodist Church in Lake Charles Louisiana is seeking an enthusiastic and dynamic individual to lead our youth ministry in a growing and vibrant church with 1000 members and over 500 in worship. The ideal full time ministerial candidate will be a mature spiritual leader at least 23 years of age who will share Christ with our students and this community. The Youth Minister needs to have a college degree, knowledge of the Bible, knowledge of the United Methodist Church, exhibit stability, enjoy working with youth and families, and have a passion for ministry (See Full Job Description Below). Compensation is comparable to local schoolteacher salary and negotiable depending on experience.

Lake Charles (www.CityOfLakeCharles.com ) is the fifth largest city in Louisiana. It is the major cultural and educational center in the southwest region of the state. As of the 2000 census, Lake Charles' population was 71,757 and the Lake Chares Area consist of over 180,000. The city serves as the parish seat of Calcasieu Parish. Lake Charles is located approximately 125 miles west of Baton Rouge, 200 Miles west of New Orleans, 140 miles east of Houston and 350 miles from Dallas. With over 75 festivals held annually, Lake Charles is referred to as the Festival Capital of Louisiana. Lake Charles is a great place for Ministry.

Director of Youth Ministry Job Description


The Director of Youth Ministry is responsible for the youth ministry (6th thru 12th grades) of First United Methodist Church Lake Charles (FUMC). The Director of Youth Ministry will develop and implement a unified ministry for youth.

Qualifications

1. Professes and evidences a Christian commitment and spiritual maturity.
2. Displays spiritual and emotional maturity, responsibility, initiative and a cooperative spirit and loves youth unconditionally.
3. Possesses a love for and knowledge of the Bible and basic theology.
4. Is well-organized, energetic, demonstrates good leadership, exercises good judgment, and maintains a positive, professional attitude and appearance.
5. Must be able to develop and facilitate activities that engage youth.
6. Exhibits excellent written and oral communication skills and develops relationships well with youth and adults.
7. Should have a good working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Publisher, and Outlook software, as well as proficiency in using the Internet.
8. College degree preferred.
9. Some biblical and/or theological training at the college or seminary level preferred.

Provisions of employment

1. Salaried, full-time but flexible hours according to program needs, with regularly scheduled office hours.
2. Attendance at weekly Administrative Staff Meetings, Administrative Board Meetings and presence at church-wide functions is expected.
3. Sunday is considered a primary workday and presence is expected (except during vacation).
4. Continuing education is encouraged subject to the following conditions:

- Must be approved by the Director of Community Life
- Must relate directly to the position
- Availability of funds

6. Must submit to a national criminal background check and be trained in the FUMC Safe Sanctuaries Policy.
7. Must be certified in First Aid and CPR (age-appropriate).



Relationships

1. The Director reports to the Director of Community Life, and through same relates to the Staff-Parish Relations Committee (SPRC) for guidance and evaluation of effectiveness in fulfilling his/her duties.
2. As a member of the First Methodist staff, the Director of Youth Ministry will offer a supportive relationship to the other staff members and pastors.
3. The Director interacts with other staff members, committees, work teams, and constituencies of the congregation as-needed in the performance of his/her duties.

Functions/Duties

PROGRAMMING

1. Develop and implement a coordinated master plan for youth ministry with measurable and attainable goals that accomplishes the following purposes:

a. Reaching and receiving youth into the faith community.
b. Creating settings where youth can connect with God such as

i. Sunday School
ii. United Methodist Youth (UMY)
iii. Missions (local and beyond)
iv. Discipleship (Bible study, small groups, etc.)
v. Special Activities

c. Nurturing and strengthening their faith through instruction in and practice of the spiritual disciplines (prayer, Bible study, etc.)
d. Sending them out into the world to be in ministry as disciples of Jesus Christ.

2. Solicit significant lay (volunteer) input on the development and implementation of the master plan and include youth representatives in the process.
3. Review the master plan quarterly with the Director of Community Life.
4. Recruit, train and equip volunteers to work in all aspects of youth ministry (counselors, Sunday School teachers, UMY Helpers, chaperones, etc.).
5. Work with church leadership to ensure the involvement of the youth in church-wide activities, both as participants and volunteers.
6. Help youth grow in their faith by presenting the gospel in a straightforward manner, modeling how to be an effective witness, answering questions, counseling with youth (and parents if appropriate), and providing resources.
7. Develop and implement a plan to contact and involve new youth, including new members, inactive members, and potential members from the community at large.
8. Provide programming that nurtures the relationship between youth and their parents.
9. Coordinate the annual confirmation classes.

ADMINISTRATION

1. Develop an annual budget for youth ministry.
2. Plan and oversee fundraisers for youth ministry.
3. Develop, implement, and resolve activity budgets for all special activities as they pertain to youth ministry.
4. Communicate and promote all youth ministry activities to youth, parents, the congregation, and the community at large through available media on an on-going basis (church bulletin, website, local newspaper, youth newsletter, email, etc.)
5. Order youth curriculum materials.
6. Maintain accurate membership roles for youth ministry.
7. Ensure that the Safe Sanctuaries policies and procedures of FUMC are followed in the recruitment of all volunteers and in all program operation.
8. Communicate effectively with parents of youth through available means (e.g. newsletter, email, parent meetings, etc.).
9. Support and participate in District and Conference-sponsored ministries when appropriate.

Must have a working knowledge of the United Methodist Church
