The Akron First United Methodist Church is seeking a highly-motivated individual who feels called by God to be engaged in full time ministry within the local church.
The Akron First United Methodist Church is a congregation of approximately 650 members with roughly 175 in attendance on Sundays. Their worship experiences include a classical worship service and an ancient-future service which features contemporary music. The church is extremely community minded and houses programs such as a Head Start program, Nursery School, a community education program, GED classes, AA groups, Scout troops, and more. Part of our campus is a community ministry building (the Wright Center) in which ministry is occurring and needs to be further developed. The church has a strong United Methodist identity and is very supportive of its conference and denomination. It is also in the midst of change. A growing community and an aging congregation have necessitated changes. An increasing amount of attention is being given to developing ministry for youth, children, and young families while strengthening our ministry to the more mature adults who are a part of our fellowship. The congregation is in the midst of adopting a new mission which will emphasize the need for evangelism and discipleship as our primary purposes for existence. Our current staff includes our Lead Pastor, Office Manager, Pastoral Care Coordinator, Music Director, Nursery Attendant, Custodians, and the Director of Discipleship and Family Ministries (who is moving on to further his education).
The Director of Discipleship and Family Ministries serves on the ministry staff alongside the pastor and other staff members to further the mission of the Akron First United Methodist Church. The position outlined below requires a high level of organization and planning abilities with prior ministry experience being preferred. This position will require 4 days a week in the office plus 1-2 evenings a week and Sunday mornings. This staff person will be directly supervised by the Lead Pastor and accountable to the Staff Parish Relations Committee.
1. Youth (15 hours):
a. Establish and meet with a youth council for planning and evaluation of the youth program.
b. Hold weekly youth group meetings.
c. Develop a curriculum plan for the year and have approved by the pastor.
d. Develop an annual event plan with the youth council.
e. Plan a service trip to be held during the summer.
f. Plan one major event every other month (bowling, skating, laser tag, retreats, camping, etc.).
g. Organize a Jr. Youth group to meet once a month.
2. Christian Education (8 hours)
a. Meet with Christian education team in January to evaluate and improve Sunday School program and in May to thank the teachers and select curriculum for September. Have samples of curriculum available at the May meeting for the teachers to look through.
b. Ensure that curriculum and supplies are ordered as needed and that the teachers have any other resources they require.
c. Keep attendance records.
d. Plan Sunday School kick off event for September.
e. Coordinate Children’s Worship programs for both worship services including finding volunteers and planning curriculum.
f. Organize and oversee small groups (discipleship groups) within church.
3. VBS (Seasonal)
a. Work with interested church members in February/March to pick a program and set dates for the month of July or August.
b. Coordinate these efforts with other local churches to ensure that there are as few overlaps as possible.
c. Recruit teachers, assistants, and volunteers and schedule a planning meeting to be held in two months prior to the dates.
d. Advertise the program in the month before in the Bugle, newsletter, bulletin, flyers throughout the community, and other venues as deemed appropriate.
4. Wright Center: (4 hours)
a. Work with the newly formed Wright Center Team to organize events and programs as requested.
b. Keep a calendar of events. Post a copy in the hallway outside the church office and the Wright Center, and supply copies to the office manager, Community Education director, and heads of the Wright Center Team. This calendar should be updated weekly.
c. Advertise events to be held in the Wright Center in the church newsletter, bulletins, Bugle, and other venues as deemed appropriate.
5. Family Ministries: (5 hours)
a. Organize 8-10 “family” friendly (church wide) social events each year.
b. Have a plan for the events to be held during the coming year in place by 8/30 and share with the pastor and office manager.
c. Advertise these events in the newsletter, bulletins, the Bugle, etc.
d. Be present for and direct all such events.
The ability to perform the following area of responsibility is preferred but we will consider applicants without these skills.
(6. Worship: 8 hours)
a. Plan the 8:15 service using themes supplied by the pastor and developing the bulletin each week.
b. Lead worship during the 8:15 service with either the piano or guitar.
c. Hold weekly worship practices with other musicians and participants.
d. Attend worship committee meetings.
$25,000 annual salary (with worship responsbilities); $20,000 annual salary (without worship responsibilities); 2 weeks paid vacation after one year; potential housing assistance in the form of reduced rent.
