The Ogema Baptist Church was established as the Swedish Baptist Church in 1880 by Swedish immigrants. The descendants of those early immigrants are still active members today with strong involvement in all aspects of the church. During the early years the church reached out to neighboring towns to plant other churches, which included Westboro, Prentice and Spirit.
Over the years of growth the church went through various stages of building projects:
• 1950, dedication of a 30’ by 40’ Sunday school building (no longer in use).
• 1963, groundbreaking ceremony of the current 44’ x 88’ worship building with a smaller unit for offices and narthex. The sanctuary was designed to seat 286 with overflow space for 100.
• 1973, completion of a Christian Education expansion.
• 1976, a church parsonage was constructed.
• 2005, groundbreaking ceremony of the newest multi-use addition.
As youth ministry has been a priority at Ogema Baptist and during the 1990’s we were bursting at the seams, again, it became evident that another building project was necessary. Ground breaking was held in the spring of 2005 and the building was completed by 2008. Volunteer members and community friends of the church supplied the labor for this monumental undertaking. It was thrilling to see the oneness of purpose and beautiful spirit of unity that prevailed. The building addition includes elevator access to the lower floor of the church, modernized kitchen facilities, additional classrooms, a larger foyer area and a large multipurpose room. The project cost $450,000 and the current mortgage is $54,000.
The church parsonage is located across the parking lot from the church. It is a 2,900 square foot, 5 bedroom home with a large living room, large family room, 3 seasons sun-room and dining area. The home has an attached 2-car garage and central air conditioning.
Current church membership is at 199 with average Sunday attendance of 186 over the past decade. Average attendance has been relatively flat for the past decade. Sunday school attendance was an average of 60 over the past year with a modest decline over the past decade.
Youth ministry has been a priority at Ogema Baptist Church. We have 3 groups who meet on Wednesday evening. Kingdom Quest is our kids club consisting of children ages 4 years old through 5th grade. This group has approximately 40 regular attendees. There is a junior high group that is made from students grades 6th through 8th. The average attendance is approximately 25 students. Finally, high school youth group has 25 who attend regularly. Annually the church sponsors and hosts a community youth rally featuring nationally recognized speakers and drawing crowds of up to 400 people from an 80 mile radius. The church also hosts an annual VBS program.
In addition to healthy youth programs, there are numerous outreach ministries and growth opportunities including but not limited to: Titus 2 (intergenerational ladies), Willing Workers, Baptist Christian Women, women’s daytime and evening bible studies, Wednesday Prayer Group, and men’s prayer group. The church has an excellent full choir. A new periodic Men’s Outreach Ministry brings in up to 200 men for sharing experiences of the great outdoors, game feeds, outdoor displays, outdoor activities and motivational gospel speakers.
The church has an active missions program with an annual budget of $27,700 supporting 15 missionaries. Through the years 21 of our members have entered into full-time Christian service as pastors, missionaries, or pastors’ wives. Also 16 served in God’s Invasion Army/Evangelism Corps. The youth group completes an annual Kingdom Seekers mission trips to local and foreign destinations. There have been numerous others who have participated in short term missions. The church has a unique relationship with a Christian School in Belize which provides ample opportunities for missions work. We are a missions-minded church.
The Ogema Baptist Church has a full time pastor and its support staff consists of two part time employees: Secretary and Youth Coordinator.
