Director of Worship & Arts
Grace Ann Arbor
Ann Arbor, Michigan, United States
Date Posted: 04/13/2009
Categories: Worship Pastor
Church Size: 501 to 750
Job Type: Part-Time
The Church: Grace Ann Arbor is a 6-month old church re-start located near the University of Michigan campus. We are composed of mostly young adults, grad students, and families (20 and 30-somethings) who are "Together Experiencing & Extending God's Grace." Grace Ann Arbor is a congregation of the Reformed Church in America. We currently have about 60-70 in attendance.
The Staff: Our staff is called to equip God's people to serve through a team ministry approach. We currently have two rotating worship teams. Also, we are also looking to hire a part-time Children's Director / Administrator.
The Position: We are looking for a passionate, young (or young at heart) but mature follower of Christ who will design, plan, and lead worship each week. We hope to begin a second service in the fall (knowledge and experience of multiple services a plus).
The Style: Our worship might be categorized as Ancient-Future, as we seek to draw upon the rich heritage of historic hymnody and liturgical expressions, as well as the best of modern worship songs (Chris Tomlin, Matt Redman, David Crowder).
** Dan Kimball expresses it well: "our young congregation sings a mix of contemporary choruses and traditional hymns. We now celebrate Advent each year with candles, responsive readings, and benedictions. We draw from liturgical elements in ancient worship and prayer books. But we also display modern art, project videos, and use a variety of 21st century worship elements. We have found that the goal shouldn't be to maintain the past or to always be on the cutting edge. Our goal is to worship in a way that represents our community to God and God to our community. That means contextualizing worship for today, but not forgetting the family of God throughout history to which we belong."
Qualifications & Responsibilities
We are looking for someone who fits the three C's (Bill Hybels): character, competence, chemistry. An additional C we are looking for is culture - someone who is able to contextualize well into the culture of the church and the city of Ann Arbor (young, academic, diverse, artistic college town). Responsibilities include:
* Plan and design weekly Worship Gathering with Lead Pastor (Scripture, theme, liturgy, prayers etc)
* Maintain weekly worship team rehearsals, providing musical and spiritual leadership to members of the worship team
* Develop liturgical / artistic / aesthetic elements of weekly Worship Gatherings
* Coordinate all audio-visual elements with A/V team (including PowerPoint, video elements, etc)
* Recruit new musicians and develop additional worship teams
* Identify and train assistant worship leaders
* Explore second Worship Gathering logistics with Lead Pastor
* Attend weekly staff meeting and occasional congregational meetings
Support & Accountability: The Director of Worship & Arts reports directly to the Lead Pastor. Support and accountability includes regular encouragement, feedback, evaluation, and ministry goals.
Hours & Compensation: 10-20 hours, depending on qualifications and experience. Additional hours can be added if candidate possess gifts in other possible Strategic Ministry Areas such as Outreach, Church Planting, and Teaching.
Compensation negotiable but ranges from $12.50 - $20.00 / hour (salary), depending on qualifications and experience.
Please send cover letter & resume electronically. Additional mp3, youtube link, or video of a recent worship leading experience helpful.
