Our Christian heritage tells us the primary focus of human life is to glorify God and enjoy Him forever. The main way we as God’s people give glory to God is through community worship. In this church, worship is offered to God with variety. Creativity is essential, both traditional and contemporary music are valued, and we seek to give to God our very best at all times. Music in worship is not a performance for human ears, but an offering to God in which the worshipers participate. The Director of Worship and Music is a key part of worship leadership in this church.
The Director of Worship and Music shall be accountable to the Senior Pastor and the Session (through the Trustee for Personnel). Monthly reviews of ministry will be held with the Senior Pastor.
• Strong commitment to the Lord Jesus Christ and active Christian faith.
• Broadly based musical competency including organ and piano performance, basic arranging and improvisation. Music degree preferred.
• Experience in and appreciation of various worship styles.
• Team player who can work closely with pastor and support staffs.
• Strong self-initiative and creativity.
• Experience with modern worship technology preferred.
• Able to work comfortably and enthusiastically within the theology and practices of the Presbyterian and Reformed Tradition.
o Assist pastoral staff in worship planning through music selection, order of worship preparation, and writing of worship elements.
o Lead the Chancel Choir: Recruit volunteer accompanists to assist during rehearsals and in worship as desired, select repertoire, rehearse, conduct, oversee chancel setup, coordinate social opportunities.
o Lead the Contemporary Praise Team as needed: During absences of the Contemporary Worship Leader, lead the team in practice and worship.
o Provide musical leadership (pipe organ/piano) to regular and special worship services, weddings, and funerals.
o Direct the Adult Handbell Choir or oversee a volunteer director. Possibly develop an additional handbell choir for younger members.
o Recruit, train and oversee music program leaders.
o Recruit new members for all musical organizations in the church.
o Coordinate volunteer musical ensembles, orchestras, and soloists for worship services.
• Working with Children and Youth
o Oversee children’s musicals (K-5) and weekly children’s music rehearsals.
o Oversee Middle School Music and Drama Group including two musical productions a year with occasional travel opportunities.
o Work with children and youth to help them develop their musical gifts, helping them offer their talents as soloists, members of small groups, and/or choir members in worship.
o Work with a dedicated and capable Administrative Assistant.
o Prepare the Worship and Music Budget for submission to the Session, and oversee expenditures.
o Attend weekly staff meetings.
o Work with program staff in the development and maintenance of an annual calendar for worship.
o Oversee the work of the Contemporary Worship Leader.
o Oversee the work of staff sound technician, including preparation of the Sound Team schedule.
o Oversee the maintenance of the musical instruments.
o Oversee the sound and video equipment in the Sanctuary and Great Room and coordinate its usage.
o Oversee the upkeep of the Music Library.
o Schedule and coordinate visiting musical ensembles and concerts.
o Obtain a substitute when unable to participate or when on vacation.
o Visitation as needed to members of this ministry.
o Continue to grow in this position through use of Continuing Education Resources.
Salary and Benefits
• Salary shall be based upon experience and ability.
• Benefits shall include medical insurance and paid vacation.
• Benefits shall include an annual expense allowance.
• Benefits shall include annual benefits for Continuing Education.
• May participate in the church’s 403-B plan.
• Salary and benefits shall be reviewed annually by the Trustees and Session.
