Summary of Position Description:

 

Southern Lakes Church is seeking a Lead Pastor to teach God’s Word and inspire us to share His love with our community and the world. We desire strong yet winsome Biblical teaching and vision casting that inspires our church body to action. In addition to sensing God’s specific call, this candidate must be passionate about equipping, mentoring, and discipling others for the multiplication of leaders. A collaborative spirit in leadership will help fuse together our already thriving areas of ministry and point them toward our common purpose. We welcome the unique passions and strengths he will bring to our team, and we are excited to witness how God will use this new combination of skills to increase our fruitfulness in ministry.

 

About Southern Lakes Church:

Southern Lakes Church is a multi-generational Evangelical Free Church that welcomes people from all over Southeastern Wisconsin, and consists of about 350 regular weekly attendees. During our two Sunday services, we focus on teaching and a blended, mostly contemporary style of worship. We have energetic children and youth programs, active men’s and women’s ministries, an empty nester’s group, and have actively supported missions for decades.

 

Geographically, Southern Lakes Church sits on the outskirts of the rural community of Elkhorn, Wisconsin, which has a population of 10,000 and another 2,000 in the surrounding Lauderdale Lakes area. Approximately 30 miles southwest of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, our region is a popular destination for many pursuits including boating, fishing, canoeing, hiking, biking, motorcycling, and camping. Many, if not most, of our attendees enjoy fellowship and growing friendships in the context of these activities.

 

Organizationally, Southern Lakes Church currently employs, full time, a Director of Children’s Ministries, a Youth Ministries Director/Worship Leader, and an Interim Pastor who has been with us since the beginning of 2017.  We employ, at 3/4 time, an office administrator, and a Director of Ministry and Operations; and on a part-time basis, a Director of Spiritual Care and a Financial Secretary.

 

Purpose Statement:

We desire to Love and honor God, Grow in the grace and knowledge of Jesus Christ, and to glorify God through continual surrender to His will. We endeavor to Share our faith with others as an expression of our obedience and love for God and those whom He has created. We purpose to equip the church through the teaching, preaching, and practicing of God's Word.

 

Responsibilities:

 

Individual:

• To be of irreproachable Christian character, having a good report (1 Timothy 3:1-13; Titus 1:1-9), to live under the control of the Holy Spirit in obedience to the principles and precepts of God’s Word – A faithful life worth emulating.

• To give himself to prayer and the preaching/teaching of God’s Word (Acts 6:4).

• To be an example to the believers in his personal, family, and public life (1 Timothy 3:1-13).

• Shall be recognized as the Spiritual leader of the church, providing and promoting spiritual leadership and encouragement to the Elder Board, Staff, ministry leaders and congregation.

• Will preach both services each Sunday and occasionally at other times, except for illness, travel, or to allow preaching opportunities for others. When not preaching, supply the pulpit with others whose message is in keeping with sound biblical doctrine.

• Will officiate at weddings and funerals as may be requested, as well as at child dedications.

• Will be a member of the Elder Board.

• Will have direct supervision over the ministry staff. Shall present annual reports to the congregation.

 

In collaboration with others:

• With the Elder Board, develop and champion the vision and values of the church and establish strategies and priorities for reinforcing and implementing them.

• Through the discipleship, training, equipping, inspiration, coaching and management of the Elders, Staff and ministry leaders (Ephesians 4:12-13):

 

Ensure the leadership of the congregation in:

  • †  Worship and Prayer (Acts 2:42)

  • †  The Study of the Word

  • †  Administering the Ordinances

  • †  Watching over the spiritual care of the congregation, assuring adequate pastoral care is maintained.

  • †  Planning and fulfilling of ministries and missions

  • †  Earnestly seeking the salvation of the lost

  • †  Ministering to the needy

Ensure the teaching of the congregation (2 Timothy 2:2):
  • †  The doctrines of the Word

  • †  Biblical principles for Christian living

  • †  How to identify & develop spiritual gifts and to function effectively as members within the body of Christ.

To discipline in love and when necessary to consult with the Elder Board and eventually the congregation if a member remains unrepentant (Matthew 18:15-17 and 1 Timothy 5:19).
 

Qualifications:

Qualified candidates should:

  • Provide a clear testimony to his faith in Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord and exhibit irreproachable Christian behavior

  • Meet biblical qualifications of Pastor found in 1 Timothy 3:1-7, Titus 1:6-9, and 1 Peter 5:1-4

  • Exhibit the spiritual gifts of pastor/teacher found in Ephesians 4:11-13

  • Hold to the Statement of Faith of the Evangelical Free Church of America without reservation

  • Be credentialed by the Evangelical Free Church of America or possess credentialing that is transferable to the EFCA

  • Hold a Bachelor’s degree or higher from an accredited evangelical university, college, or seminary. Graduate level studies preferred.

  • Exhibit confidence in God’s call to Lead Pastoral Ministry

  • Exhibit a passion for evangelism

  • Exhibit the skills and abilities of collaborative visionary leadership

  • Have a willingness to make a long-term commitment, as God leads, to our church and community, of at least 10 years

  • Be Married (preferred)

Experience:
  • Lead Pastor or Associate Pastor of a church congregation of at least 400 regular attendees (5-10 years experience preferred) 

  • Experience in a multi-staff setting supervising other leaders

Accountability:
  • First and foremost, the Lead Pastor is accountable to God

  • Secondly, the Lead Pastor is accountable to the church body via their elected respresentative: the Elder Board

  • It is recommended, but not required, that the Lead Pastor have at least one mentor or trusted advisor to whom he could turn as needed.
