Position Overview: Grace Community Church is currently seeking applications from qualified individuals for the position of Missional Community Pastor. The successful candidate will work with the Senior Pastor to assimilate people into Missional Communities and other discipleship environments for the sake of growing people in faith and equipping believers as disciples who make disciples.

Church Background: Grace was established in Chico, California in 1920 and has grown steadily over the years to currently include 600-700 regular attenders. Grace is bound by a simple mission of seeking to know, show, and share the Gospel in all of life, and helping others do the same for God’s glory and the good of the world. Offering inspiring Sunday services for attenders of all ages, we focus our efforts on equipping and encouraging God’s people to be tireless in showing the Gospel with their actions and proclaiming the Gospel with their words. We are committed to working through a missional community model of ministry that challenges congregants to engage mission in the everyday with other people in their gatherings. We are supported in our efforts by a large facility, a unified staff and positive relationships with other churches and service organizations throughout the community.

Location and Demographics:  Grace Community Church is located in Chico, California, a city of 88,000 situated in the northern part of the state.  California State University, Chico (also known as Chico State), is located in the heart of the downtown area lending innovative thinking, cultural diversity, and youthful energy to a city surrounded by agricultural land that is dotted with rice fields and fruit and nut trees. This results in a unique blend of rural charm and college-town vitality that makes Chico an ideal place to live and work. Chico serves as a commercial hub for the 220,000 people living in Butte County, providing Chico residents with many housing options, a strong school system, and a well-regarded medical community. Chico’s warm, dry climate, and Bidwell Park --one of the largest municipal parks in the nation-- provide residents with opportunities to enjoy a slow pace and a variety of outdoor activities.    

Primary Responsibilities:

Working with the Senior Pastor, the Missional Community Pastor:

  • Casts vision and executes strategy that grows the Missional Communities of Grace Community Church in size and effectiveness.

  • Leads the Missional Community coaching team, ensuring that Missional Communities are supported with training and resources to nurture life on life discipleship, life in community relationships and life on mission engagement.

  • Is responsible for the Welcome Luncheons and Connect Classes, so that people assimilate into the life of the church through community and membership.

  • Conducts the baptism orientation and follow-up process to ensure that those being baptized understand their faith in Christ and are given opportunity to pursue that relationship in the context of community.

  • Is responsible for seasonal groups and special offerings, ensuring that groups are in alignment with the culture of Grace Community Church. Attention is given to ensure that all environments help people move in relationship with God and people.

  • Directs the counseling ministry of the church by identifying, training and resourcing counselors to support the counseling needs within the church.

  • Serves on the sermon team and teaches as needed by the Senior Pastor.

  • Is responsible for the Sunday morning service support teams (Welcome Team, Cup of Grace and Communion), ensuring that leaders are well equipped through a shared vision, effective recruitment, and continuous training.

  • Is responsible for other duties as assigned by the Senior Pastor.

 

Required Qualifications: The successful applicant will have a breadth of education, experience, and skills that enable fulfillment of the responsibilities of the Missional Community Pastor as summarized above. Preference will be given to those who demonstrate a genuine call to ministry, a true servant’s heart, and application and supporting materials that demonstrate the following:  

  • A mature and growing faith in Christ that serves as a model to those they lead.

(1 Corinthians 11:1).

  • Completion of a graduate degree from an accredited Christian seminary.

  • A proven track record of significant and increasingly complex ministry leadership.

  • A collaborative leader who is adept at developing, leading, and encouraging teams of volunteers.

  • A clear, engaging, and inspirational leadership style.

  • A self-starter who is adept at identifying strategies to overcome growth barriers in life and ministry.

  • A consummate learner and someone who desires to learn new skills and approaches to developing people in their gospel identity.

  • The ability to address conflict and initiate needed course corrections directly, fairly, and graciously.

  • Full agreement with the doctrinal position of Grace Community Church and its membership covenant.
