Job Description:

ALONGSIDE is a counseling-focused retreat ministry for missionaries and pastors who desire restoration, renewal, and equipping. We are seeking a staff therapist. The ideal candidate will have a Michigan license in a mental health field (or be license-eligible) and will have several years of experience as a mental health professional as well as several years of experience in overseas missions work. The mental health practice and the overseas missions experience may be concurrent.


Pupose of the Position

To shepherd, counsel, and teach missionaries and pastors and others in vocational ministry and their families; to network to make the ministry of ALONGSIDE known among persons in ministry and those responsible for the wellbeing of pastors, missionaries, and others in vocational ministry; to contribute to the overall teamwork of the ministry. 


Duties and Responsibilities


1.  To shepherd persons in vocational ministry and their families through their healing process at ALONGSIDE throughout each stage:

  1. The initial phone call of inquiry;
  2. Subsequent contacts with missionary and/or mission board and/or home church and/or denomination as appropriate;
  3. The individual/marital/family counseling while here;
  4. Follow-up visits, phone calls, e-mail;
  5. Advocacy for the missionary or pastor with his mission board or church or denomination as appropriate.

2.  To lead devotional and seminar times (and officiate in serving the Lord’s Supper / Holy Communion to program participants as appropriate if ordained).


3.  With written permission from a program participant, to make recommendations to  mission boards and/or churches and/or denominations as appropriate regarding the needs of the program participant.


4.  To conduct missionary candidate evaluation.


5.  As schedule and finances permit, to travel to the mission field upon invitation to minister to missionaries on the field.


6.  To represent ALONGSIDE at conferences 1-3 times a year; and as there is opportunity to represent ALONGSIDE in churches, and at mission boards, and with individual pastors and missionaries in a friend-raising capacity to promote good public relations, to develop referral sources, to attract clients, and to attract donors.


7.  To carry out other responsibilities as deemed necessary by the Executive Director or the Clinical Director for the overall good of the ministry.

  • A desire to provide servant-leadership, care, and counsel to missionaries and pastors, as well as to members of their families.
  • A warm, engaging, accessible individual who enjoys interaction with those inside and outside the church.
  • An ability to integrate biblical principles with psychological counseling.
  • An ability to understand and engage in multi-generational and multi-cultural ministry.
  • A passion for professionalism and excellence.

Education/Professional Experience Qualifications

  • Minimum of M.A. in a mental health or professional counseling program.
  • A Michigan license (or license-eligibility) to practice in a mental health or professional counseling field.
  • A minimum of 4 years in ministry, specifically overseas ministry if counseling missionaries
  • A minimum of 4 years of experience as a counselor (can be concurrent with ministry experience).

Physical Demands/Work Environment


While performing the duties of this position, employee is regularly required to talk, hear, see, stand, walk, sit, and bend.  Employee must be willing and able to travel by ground or air transportation in changing weather conditions in order to carry out responsibilities of the position; employee must maintain a valid U.S. driver’s license in order to operate a motor vehicle.
