Ministry Qualifications

The Director of Children and Youth Ministries should:

  • be a dedicated Christian, passionately in love with Jesus and consistently looking for ways to grow in his/her faith;
  • have an understanding of and the ability to promote the basics of our United Methodist beliefs;
  • be an effective teacher and communicator of the Christian faith with the ability to relate to kids, youth, and adults; 
  • have a college degree or its equivalence in a related field or willingness to pursue such;
  • have the desire and ability “to make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world,”
  • helping others to grow in their faith, training them to use their gifts and talents as they serve Christ in the world;
  • be self-motivated, creative, organized and teachable;
  • be able to have fun, be serious, and maintain order in his/her ministry area;
  • be committed to a team approach to ministry – working with fellow staff, volunteers, and parents;
  • have excellent written and verbal communication skills, conflict management skills, and technological skills.


Ministry Responsibilities (include but are not limited to the following:)

The Director of Children and Youth Ministries must covenant to:

  • direct and oversee the church’s ministry to people from birth through high school graduation (to include the nursery);
  • provide weekly ministry opportunities that offer opportunities in both small and large group settings;
  • be willing to visit all families and engage children and youth in their homes, schools, and extra-curricular activities;
  • effectively communicate with children, youth, and their parents through various forms of media;
  • be responsible for the integration of children and youth into the total life and ministry of the Church;
  • plan, organize and participate in mission opportunities for children and youth throughout the year;
  • provide guidance and assistance to children and youth Sunday School classes;
  • serve as a team member with Trinity’s Confirmation teaching experience;
  • recruit, disciple, and sustain volunteer leaders;
  • encourage the participation and provide opportunities for the children and youth to be involved in United Methodist Conference events and spiritual growth offerings;
  • regularly attend the Sunday worship services (both the early and late service) as well as other regularly scheduled meetings and events of the congregation;
  • offer assistance to the senior pastor with worship as needed (children’s moments);
  • be part of the church ministry team – attending staff meetings and encouraging and supporting the overall mission of the church;
  • build relationships with other children and youth ministry leaders in the Sumter area seeking to foster a spirit of cooperation;
  • meet regularly with your ministry supervisor including a yearly evaluation;
  • complete Trinity UMC’s Safe Sanctuary Training and be cleared through TRAK-1 employment screening;
  • commit to upholding Trinity’s Safe Sanctuary Policy for the wellbeing of our children, youth, and adults;
  • keep a current record of all children and youth to include names, age, grade, addresses, phone numbers, and any other avenue of communication used to with the family;
  • coordinate finances of the children and youth ministries and oversee the budgets and fundraisers for each.
