Qualifications

 

1. Experience

1 year total ministry experience or equivalent preferred

Experience in working with children’s classes

Experience in working with and recruiting volunteers preferred

Internships at various churches preferred

Brings vision, creativity, and innovation into all areas of children’s ministry – birth through sixth grade

Must have ability to teach others in both traditional and non-traditional methods

Must be a good organizer and planner

Works well with volunteers

Ability to recruit volunteers to supervise departments and volunteers to teach classes

Ability to equip volunteers with lessons, materials, supplies and training for various positions

Bible lessons applicable to children from birth through sixth grade

An appropriate knowledge of the Bible

Position Summary

The Children’s Minister is called to facilitate a meaningful, consistent, dynamic children’s ministry that recognizes and promotes the understanding that First Baptist’s ministry to children is a discipline of the kingdom of God into which our children are welcomed as full participants. This person will coordinate the children’s departments from birth through 6th grade. This person will be responsible for overall curriculum development for Sunday morning classes, Wednesday night classes, VBS (Vacation Bible School), and any other children’s classes developed by the church. The Children’s Minister will also be responsible for the recruitment and training of volunteers to supervise and teach in these children’s areas. The Children’s Minister will encourage our volunteers to display a warm, loving environment where Biblical truths are learned and where Christian relationships are formed.

 

Performance Responsibilities

  1. As a “vision caster,” the children’s minister is primarily responsible for defining a theological orientation for First Baptist’s children’s ministry. This involves continually articulating the purpose, meaning, and direction of the ministry.
  • Promote and maintain overall vision for the ministry that is consistent with congregational goals and vision.
  • Develop and maintain a children’s learning environment that builds a strong foundation of Bible knowledge and Bible stories in an environment of fun, excitement and energy.
  • Foster the formation of a community that is committed to communicating to our children that they are valued, providing them with instruction from God’s word, nurturing them in love, modeling our faith and encouraging their participation in the life of the church.
  • Ensure meaningful recognition and integration of children into the life of the church.

       2. Coordinate Early Childhood, Pre-school, and Elementary Ministries –

  • Recruit and train supervisors for these areas
  • Assist supervisors in recruiting and training of volunteers in these areas
  • Ensure that supervisors are equipped with up-to-date curriculum, supplies, materials, etc. for teachers and other volunteers.
  • Train volunteers on ongoing basis.
  • Hiring and supervising of paid childcare workers in nursery and other children’s events as necessary.

       3. Coordinate VBS and other children’s activities sponsored by the church

  • Responsible for theme and curriculum for VBS
  • Responsible for recruiting and training volunteers for VBS

       4. Coordinate children’s worship programs

  • Recruit and train supervisors for children’s worship programs
  • Assist supervisor in recruiting and training of volunteers
  • Ensure that supervisors are equipped with up-to-date curriculum, supplies, materials, etc.    for teachers and other volunteers.
  • Train volunteers on ongoing basis.

       5. Coordinate Events

  • There are annual events that are oriented toward young children and their families. (e.g. Trunk or Treat, Easter Events, etc.) The children’s minister will be expected to be responsible for or have significant involvement in these events.

       6. Curriculum Development – Birth through 6th grade. As the need arises, will chair a committee on curriculum   development for birth through 6th grades. Curriculum will periodically need to be evaluated as to whether it is Biblically based, scripturally accurate, and reflects the needs of the current culture.

       7. Coordinate Children’s ministry with overall vision for First Baptist

  • As a member of the ministry staff, the children’s minister will be expected to support the vision of the church and integrate the vision through the entire children’s area.
  • Numerous church activities require childcare or support from the children’s ministry. The children’s minister will be expected to help supply support for these events.
  • To become an active team member of the First Baptist staff and serve where needed.

       8. To serve as a resource to parents and grandparents for the spiritual development of their children and grandchildren.

       9. Develop and execute a strategy to reach and assimilate new children and families

      10. Oversee a child-friendly redesign of the children’s rooms and hallway

      11. Create opportunities for ministry and visibility outside the walls of the church

      12. Reports to Senior Pastor and Ministerial Committee

      13. Assist in budget development with direction from Senior Pastor and Stewardship Committee

      14. Create web calendar of events, ensuring these items are given to the website manager

      15. Create & co-ordinate service opportunities

      16. Meet with parents at least 2 times a year to communicate needs and opportunities.

      17. Participate in relevant workshops, seminars and conferences

      18. Work closely with Youth Minister to assure smooth transition to youth program

      19. Develop & maintain safety & security (Physically, emotionally & spiritually) systems for children – especially on First Baptist premises & First Baptist sponsored activities.

  • Background checks for all workers
  • Recommend facility improvements to ensure security
  • Create & enforce necessary rules for safety and security
