Role

We are seeking a part-time professional music coordinator, choir director, keyboard and organ player to work collaboratively with our pastoral partners and the many volunteers in our diverse music program. We have one weekly worship service with participation by many congregants. The Music Director and Coordinator is responsible for developing and leading an inclusive, cohesive music program that enhances both private and communal worship by reflecting the values of our social justice-oriented congregation.

 

QualificationsSkilled pianist and organist (including the ability to play the piano from a lead sheet)

  • Experienced choir director
  • Ability to coordinate and/or lead a variety of quality vocal and music ensembles, including the contemporary band, nurturing all ensembles toward quality and participation in a spirit of cooperation and mutual respect
  • Strong musical worship skills, including coordinating different musical ensembles in working together to create a coherent worship experience
  • Ability to actively engage the congregation during worship to enhance the participatory worship experience

Job Responsibilities

  • Provide piano and organ accompaniment and lead music for the weekly Sunday morning worship service, Christmas Eve, Maundy Thursday, and up to three other annual special events per year
  • Coordinate CBC’s various music ensembles (e.g., choir, band, a cappella group, recorder consort, small ensembles, soloists, etc.) to create a cohesive music program that supports the values of the congregation and enhances the worship experience
  • Select and lead music from a wide variety of sources, styles, and genres (including traditional, contemporary, sacred, secular, and other types of music), with sensitivity to the needs of the congregation
  • Organize, schedule and lead weekly 90-minute choir rehearsals and additional 20-minute rehearsals prior to Sunday service, distributing music ahead of scheduled rehearsals
  • Organize, schedule and lead weekly 30-45-minute band rehearsals prior to Sunday service, as well as quarterly 90-minute Sunday evening rehearsals, distributing music ahead of scheduled rehearsals
  • Organize volunteers in the music program and appropriately delegate music responsibilities to skilled musicians and leaders within the congregation
  • Collaborate with pastors on selection of service music and hymns for weekly worship service and for special services (e.g., Christmas Eve, Easter, Ash Wednesday, and Maundy Thursday)
  • Attend and participate in periodic church staff meetings
  • Attend and participate in CBC Board of Worship meetings as needed
  • Select anthems and other music for the choir and band
  • Build CBC’s repertoire of music consistent with our theological values of peace, justice, and environmental sustainability
  • Elicit congregational participation in CBC music as a spiritual practice, including teaching new music to the congregation and encouraging the ongoing formation of small ensembles
  • Organize guest musicians for special services (such as Advent IV and Easter Sunday)
  • Arrange substitute musicians for any worship services for which s/he will not be present
  • Coordinate maintenance and tuning of church’s pianos and organ

  • Provides leadership for worship services in a way that enhances the movement of worship, including assisting with transitions during different elements of service
  • Demonstrates passion for nurturing the musical gifts of others and fostering a spirit of inclusion (e.g., embraces working with other instrumentalists, focuses on drawing the best from vocalists of all ages and levels, and fosters congregational singing)
  • Brings a collaborative, flexible spirit and relational approach to engaging with pastors and volunteers in planning, rehearsing, and sharing music for worship
  • Contributes to positive and effective staff team dynamic and fosters collegiality
  • Consistently completes duties and responsibilities in a timely way
  • Effectively problem-solves and completes other assignments within the scope of this role

Hours and Compensation

Competitive salary. The responsibilities of the Music Director and Coordinator are based on an average 15 hours/week. Opportunities to play for weddings and funerals for additional, negotiable fee.

 

Vacation

The Music Director and Coordinator is entitled to four weeks of paid vacation each calendar year, including four Sundays, to be arranged in consultation with the pastors.
